Homeschooling Pros and Cons - Andy Garrett
Introduction
Children face many challenges growing up, and their education shouldn’t be another obstacle to overcome. Many parents across the nation are turning to one method to ensure their child receives the specialized attention and personal time he or she deserves: homeschooling.
In the past, homeschooling carried with it a certain stigma of being an anti-social student ill-equipped for integration into the real world. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Recent statistics shows a surge in homeschool enrollment among students of all ages, with colleges often valuing such students thanks to their carefully cultivated interest in learning. The vast majority of homeschooled students appreciate their experience later in life and succeed greatly in careers they were able to focus on, themselves, as a growing student.
Yet there are rarely success stories without stories of failure. When a student leaves the ranks of the publically educated, he or she entrusts their education and future to their private teacher—a teacher who will be, statistically, one of their parents. The quality of education received can vary greatly depending upon how you, the teacher, are able to overcome the many challenges of being an at-home teacher to your child.
These challenges include managing—or sacrificing—personal time to educate your child, balancing your responsibilities as a parent with those of a teacher, the hidden costs of homeschooling, and the possibility of a lackluster curriculum—and what you can do to sell your son or daughter on the idea of education being not only interesting, but personally rewarding.
This book is designed primarily for those interested in removing their child from the public school system, but curious about the pros and cons of doing so. Many of these topics will be presented with strategies to success or possible solutions to the
