About this ebook

Matthew’s Gospel is aimed at a Jewish audience. Its purpose is to witness that Jesus was the promised Messiah of the Old Testament. Matthew emphasises the words of the Lord regarding the Kingdom of Heaven. This was done to counterbalance the popular Jewish belief of the day that the Messiah would be a militant leader who would overthrow the current Roman occupation and re–establish the throne of David.

    Summary: Matthew writes for a Jewish audience. His purpose is to witness that Jesus was the promised Messiah of the Old Testament and that he fulfilled many Old Testament prophecies. Matthew makes no fewer than 60 references to the Old Testament writings as fulfilled in Christ, so that the word fulfilled becomes characteristic of the book. The Jews placed great importance on Scripture, and this Gospel abounds in such references. Matthew emphasises the words of the Lord regarding the kingdom of heaven, possibly to counter the popular Jewish belief of the day that the Messiah would be a militant leader who would overthrow the current Roman occupation and re-establish the throne of David.

    The whole Gospel is woven around five great speeches of Jesus: (1) ch. 5-7; (2) ch. 10; (3) ch. 13; (4) ch. 18; (5) ch. 24-28. Each speech concludes with the words When Jesus had finished saying these things . . .

    Key verse: All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel'-which means 'God with us'. (1:22-23).

    Matthew, being one of the twelve apostles, and early called to the apostleship, and from the time of his call a constant attendant on our Saviour, was perfectly well qualified to write fully the history of his life. He relates what he saw and heard. He is eminently distinguished for the distinctness and particularity with which he has related many of our Lord's discourses and moral instructions. Of these his sermon on the mount, his charge to the apostles, his illustrations of the nature of his kingdom, and his prophecy on mount Olivet, are examples. He has also wonderfully united simplicity and energy in relating the replies of his Master to the cavils of his adversaries. There is not, as Dr. A. Clarke justly remarks, one truth or doctrine, in the whole oracles of God, which is not taught in this Evangelist. The outlines of the whole spiritual system are here correctly laid down. even Paul himself has added nothing. He has amplified and illustrated the truths contained in this Gospel - under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, neither he, nor any of the other apostles, have brought to light one truth, the prototype of which has not been found in the words and acts of our blessed Lord as related by Matthew.

    There is no substitute for you reading the Bible directly for yourself. The Holy Spirit can speak directly to you as you read the Word. However, some people who read the Bible are like the man in Acts 8:26-39. When asked, Do you understand what you are reading? he replied How can I, unless someone guides me? To help you understand the Bible, God has given pastors, evangelists and teachers. In addition a series of study questions can guide you through the Scriptures. These study questions should be a great tool in increasing your knowledge of God and His Word.

    Study of Matthew Chapter 1

    Chapter 1 Overview

    Mat_1:1, The genealogy of Christ from Abraham to Joseph;

    Mat_1:18, He is miraculously conceived of the Holy Ghost by the Virgin Mary, when she was espoused to Joseph;

    Mat_1:19, The angel satisfies the doubts of Joseph, and declares the names and office of Christ: Jesus is born;

    Mat 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

    Mat 1:2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

    Mat 1:3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

    Mat 1:4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

    Mat 1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

    Mat 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

    Mat 1:7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

    Mat 1:8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

    Mat 1:9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

    Mat 1:10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

    Mat 1:11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

    Mat 1:12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

    Mat 1:13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

    Mat 1:14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

    Mat 1:15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

    Mat 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

    Mat 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

    Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

    Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

    Mat 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

    Mat 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

    Mat 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

    Mat 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

    Mat 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

    Mat 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
