Prologue
How is it possible for nature to make two identical carbon copies? Such tiny replicas of one another that can mirror the other without planning or forethought, that no one can distinguish one from the other.
Like the branch of a Texr'l tree. The two entwined about the other until they were inseparable. One dark branch striated with the light, indivisible and yet separate. Until both twist away in a flourish of rainbow colored leaves.
Each explosive riot of fruits and stems spun a convoluted path along natural lines, each traveling in distinct directions as to oppose the other, while normally enhancing the life of its twin.
Such is the case with Chase and Mestrock; my boys are so alike but distinctively different.
Sitting in the shade of the stories-high Texr'l tree, a blanket stretched out beneath her laden with various foods and drinks, Ca'rea Stalvik watched as her young boys played down below her.
She had chosen this spot carefully; the slight hill allowed her to view their surroundings while giving her children the freedom to run and explore among the variegated purple and teal branches.
She was in the prime of her life, her body fit from running down long hallways chasing after patients that were crashing, or some other emergency with her long flaxen hair streaming behind her. Ten, long and tedious, hours a day found her in the capitol’s Healing Center of Eastern Zethra.
Now, on a rare day when she wasn’t being called from one end of the gigantic center to another, she chose to spend the day in the park with her children. However, she wasn’t about to spend it racing after them instead.
Unlike many of her people, her parents had refused to give her a call name, a nickname that would protect her birth names from being used by anyone. They believed a birth name was sacred, and should only be shared with those you truly loved. Her parents, also felt the practice to be foolish and confusing to children.
While she and her beloved Anare, the one person they were blessed with, believed in the tradition, they had tried to appease both of their families by giving Chase a call-name, while referring to Mestrock as ‘little man’ only when their parental units weren’t around. It was difficult, however, knowing and seeing the evidence of her younger son's jealousy over it all, but especially over Chase having his own call name while he was reduced to giving everyone his actual name. Secretly she called him Seeker, as he always sought ways to appease them.
*~*~*
Something was wrong, but Chase couldn’t figure out what it was. There was a niggling kernel, a mere hint that kept fluttering in and out of his mind. A teasing sensation as it just hovered at the edge of consciousness before darting away before he could grasp it.
The bond he shared with his brother was one that most couldn’t fathom because they could never experience it, even with the aid of the Cortex Recorders implanted in every person.
The CR’s started as a means for the military to monitor missions, but soon grew. Now each life brought into the galactic federation was injected with their own cluster of microscopic nanobots.
Each time Mestrock had wandered off when they were young boys, for several hours or even days at a time, Chase felt a sensation along the link with his twin he just couldn’t explain.
It felt exciting, like when Fadare had taken them Veriz hunting. The large beast had towered over his six-foot eight father, and looked like a hulking-maniac-on-six-legs to the young boys. It had taken several shots from their enhanced blasters before the beast was brought down. They’d shared the meat with several neighbors, but Mestrock had been livid, wanting to keep it all for the family.
It became harder to bear each time his brother vanished, tearing at his heart to see it. Like a living darkness that spread and devoured the light inside, Mestrock became more and more difficult.
Each time Mestrock returned from one of his little disappearing acts, Chase felt that he was different. His behavior was more erratic, his anger rose faster and faster, and held grudges that would sometimes last months.
Now, Chase wasn’t sure if he should inform his parental unit or just let it go. He didn’t want to cause further dissension between him and his brother. As it was, the rift between them was growing by the day.
Chapter 1
The sound of a knife slicing through paper-thin skin sent a shiver coursing through his being. It was one he would always relish. It was a soft snicking sound, almost imperceptible, but his hearing was attuned to it. He craved it.
He remembered clearly the first time as though it was yesterday. The way the rusty blade fought its way past that resilient outer layer of skin. It was harder than he thought it would be, forcing him to press with more force just to get a few inches. The way the muscles refused to part way. He had to slice the blade back and forth a few times to make any headway.
It always amazed him just how difficult it was to puncture through living flesh straight on. The muscles and various internal organs provided an effective barrier. At least it would have, had his blade not been so sharp. It varied, depending on where in the body and the angle used when pushing the blade, but it required an amazing amount of force.
He still dreamt of the high pitch screams the man released as the layers of security were stripped from him. Both mentally and physically.
The victims had no idea they were marked until it was too late. Now, he cherished each one, forcing them to watch as the light sparkled off the weapon before it became coated in their blood. He always admired the scent of utter terror as it enhanced the coppery tang of blood that permeated the air just as the realization dawned that there was no one to save them.
He shuddered and moaned. The culmination of selecting his prey, of stalking them and bringing them to his den where he would spend countless days torturing them aroused him like nothing else could. Mestrock always felt a sense of disappointment, when each victim would succumb to their wounds.
It was enough to bring him to such an intense sexual release it nearly drove him to his knees. Even the most expensive and talented whore found within the planet of Vashta’s elite resorts couldn’t begin to mimic the level of pleasure he received from each victim.
And he’d tried, oh how he’d tried to find a way to safely release his pent-up darkness in unusual ways. None of them matched this euphoria. While they were talented, they didn’t even come close.
He had been forced to suffer through countless counselors and self-help books. Numerous meetings of every possible sort as a child, until he'd finally learned that some things he would just have to accept as a mystery, because they were inevitable and unchangeable.
Some would say this woman's life was ending far too soon. Who could say how much time any creature had? Some were born with a truncated life, while others enjoyed the benefits of longevity. Even fewer could
