Preface - Whom This Book is For or, Why I Wrote This Book

Are you offering something for sale? A product or a service? Would you like it to sell well and for a long time? If you answered Yes, then it is important to define business rules for your product or service as well as for your organization.

Business rules are guidelines designed to help your company create and sustain the products and services you sell. You are responsible for defining and meeting these rules.

If you look a bit closer, you will discover that you already use business rules, every day. If you are involved in the production process of your company’s products, you follow certain rules for how to do this. If you design a product for your business, you do so within certain parameters and specifications. And if you suggest a new range of parameters and specifications, a review process is required for them to be adjusted and approved. If you are a part of your company’s sales department, then you must negotiate various contractual terms with customers — for example, the state of the product upon sale, whether updates are needed and how often, what maintenance services to include and how much they cost.

All these and many more are the business rules that support your company’s products and services. As a term, business rules are relatively new, especially for small businesses, but its relevance and importance continues to grow.

Business rules don’t apply only to the planning, designing, producing, maintaining or discarding of your products or services. They are also rules that your customers must follow while using your product so that it functions to its full potential.

A steady interplay among the components of a business is required for it not only to survive but also to prosper, and therefore business rules play a crucial part in a company’s success and longevity.

If you’re unable to take a professional training course on business rules, such as the ones I offer *, then here is an alternative for you — right here, right now. This book, simply and illustratively written, provides a brief, essential overview of business rules.

    A disclaimer

The information in this book is not intended to be exhaustive or academic.

This book is not a work of science. You can find online many profound and detailed resources on business rules and how to write them successfully, particularly for large corporations and ventures.

This book is also not a resource on how to start a new business. Each country has its own practices, many of which can be found with a simple online search. There are also many great books on this topic, available in both brief and extensive forms. Two of my favorite resources, which helped me immensely when starting my own business, are listed as number 1 and number 2 in the Recommended Reading list at the end of this book.

This book also does not claim to be a thorough guide on pursuing a certain field of business. There are many excellent how-to books in specific areas (self-publishing, starting a blog, moving houses, planning a wedding, etc.) which provide guidance and assist with decisions which, when made, become the business rules for your project or field. If you would like to know which of the many resources available on the market I found valuable, feel free to contact me at vib@optimistwriter.com.

This book is designed to give you the easiest, fastest and most practical introduction to business rules, as I see it. It provides a checklist and an overview of what you need to consider and do when developing a product or service. It also demonstrates why it is important to consolidate your business rules, and what can happen if you don’t have them under control.

    Background

My experience with business rules had its beginning in May 2004, when I started working for German Defense in their Logistics Department. It expanded in June 2004 when I joined my first meeting of an S1000D® working group. S1000D is an international specification used for technical publications using a common source database, where the latter

…is an information store and management tool for all objects required to produce the technical publications within projects. **

    By its own definition,

S1000D is an international specification for the procurement and production of technical publications. While the title restricts its use to technical publications, it has been found through application that the principles of the specification can be applied to non-technical publications. ***

There is tremendous value to be learned from S1000D. A structural data handling approach,
