      White skin glistened under a thin sheen of sweat, brittle bones jutting out from beneath the folds. Dark bruises hung heavy under bloodshot eyes, pupils a black pinprick of an island surrounded by green. Veins stood out, dark and angry like raised scars against his skin, varying shades of purple and green.

      The man’s eyes darted between Blake and the mouth of the alley. His hand moved, the blade glinting in the dim streetlights as it pressed against her sternum. A sharp but light pressure against the bone.

      Steam wafted from the grates below, the howl of a train’s horn blaring from underfoot as the concrete shivered. Puddles rippled, distorting their reflections. Condensation clung
