    One Step At a Time

    November 20th

Maybe I could just pretend that I’m sick that day, says Lee as we drive up the New Jersey Turnpike. We are heading to the Saint Lydia’s Church just outside of the city of Elizabeth. It is the only consecrated location within driving distance where I can safely attempt this ritual.

Too late. I already had to call in way too many favors for this. You are going to that play come Hell or high water.

    Interesting word choice, honey.

Lee’s niece is going to be performing in a Nativity play at the family’s church. As this is her acting debut, he is expected to attend. As he is technically a demon, this is a challenge for him. I say technically, of course, because while Lee started as a lemure he hasn’t progressed like normal demons do.

I have been working on a ritual that would allow Lee to safely, albeit temporarily, visit Holy ground without spontaneously combusting or otherwise revealing his demonic nature to any of his fellow churchgoers. My peers in the College of Evocation consider this a fascinating academic exercise and have been happy to help with the theory-work.

The members of the College of Divinities, however, have been...resistant.

Theoretically, the ritual should work. But the only way to test it is to perform the ritual at an actual consecrated location, which means I need the cooperation of the College of Divinities. While there are plenty of consecrated sites in the region, only a handful of them have ties to the College of Divinities. And I can’t exactly test the ritual in front of mundanes. So, I had to get permission
