    Foreword

Caregivers are ‘angels in disguise’ as they journey alongside a loved one, a relative or a patient as they struggle with a life-threatening condition.

Mandy is such a caregiver. She speaks from her own personal experience but also from her solidly grounded belief in the unchanging love of God and in the knowledge of the resilience of the human spirit.

I was privileged to know Nigel and Mandy for several years.

Nigel was a quiet, courageous man but initially bewildered by the undiagnosed symptoms and mercurial emotions.

Together they travelled through the highs and lows of the journey experiencing the roller-coaster of horror, hope, sorrow, weariness, frustration, surrender and, trust. Their love for one another deepened as, with a steadfast courage, they sought the guidance of both God and the medical profession through it all.

Read this book and draw strength from it, written by one who knows.

    Introduction

This book will not give you all the answers when you find yourself in the challenging position of having to care for a member of your family with a serious, potentially life-threatening illness. Every person’s story is different, and everyone deals with such situations in their own way. There are no right ways and no wrong ways. Just different ways.

But its goal is to encourage you, the Carer, and to help you connect with God as you face the challenges every day presents.

Who am I to write such a book?

I have no medical training. I’m just a wife who was plunged into the role of Carer when my husband, Nigel, was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Nigel was an energetic man, living a healthy life-style – and yet cancer struck out of the blue. Our feelings swirled around us. One day we were angry, the next day one of us would be in denial whilst the other bargained with God. There was no pattern. It was as if we were living in a kaleidoscope of emotions.

Both Nigel and I had been Christ-followers for many years. We were active in our church. But suddenly life changed dramatically for us.

How could God let this happen to us? Where was our miracle? Many questions were never answered, yet through it all God was there. We heard Him speak to us through Scripture, friends and family, and even the radio.

We prayed for healing yet, day by day, the evidence of our eyes, and the doctor’s reports belied the fact that there would be healing. I heard God’s promises, but I couldn’t see healing happening. Miracles were taking place around us for other people – yet not for us. Life was hard. I watched as Nigel grew increasingly frail.

    Until the end.

Where was God now? How could He let this happen to me? What would I do, where would I go, how would
