*This book is dedicated to my maternal grandparents, Daniel and Marjorie Clarke, both of whom passed away in August 2005. They brought joy into our lives, and they are surely missed.

*Not every poem included in this book is dated in chronological order. This is not an oversight on my part. Rather, I have made changes and substitutions over the years.

    Great sun provides warmth

To those who live far below.

    Bathe in its glory.

    Never remember mountains

    Crammed into streets.

    Subways blocked society

    Moving the stairs.

    Just laugh when buildings

    Leave concrete Philadelphia.

    7/4/05

    Snow falls thick outside.

    Things all hidden ‘neath the white;

    The earth is resting.

    7/5/05

    Owner’s pane bounces

    As others muck around.

    Thoughts of limbs hung away.

I drink desire until we ground defense.

    7/5/05

    Sun warms frozen veins

    Of winter as it marches

    In neatly lined forms.

    7/6/05
