Natural Antibiotics - Janice Blair
Introduction
Reaching for the antibiotics to treat minor illnesses such as coughs and colds may relieve the symptoms of an individual's bacterial infection in the short-term, but in the long-term, and as a society, our growing dependence on antibiotics to treat non-life-threatening illnesses, such as coughs and colds, may be doing more harm than good.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when a strain of bacteria can no longer be treated by an antibiotic because it has become immune to it. In some instances, bacterial resistance to antibiotics may gradually evolve over time through natural selection. However, according to APUA (Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics), the current trend for antibiotic resistance is caused by our overuse and abuse of antibiotics.
This includes using antibiotics to treat minor illnesses which do not require their use. In some countries, where antibiotics can be bought over-the-counter and without a prescription, we are cultivating the perfect conditions for antibiotic resistance.
One of the best things we can do to improve this worsening situation is to look to alternative treatments for those small infections, such as natural ingredients and homeopathic remedies.
In fact, with antibiotic resistance on the rise, this is something that is already happening in the pharmaceutical industry. Traditional antiseptics, antibacterials, and antimicrobials, such as tea tree oil or eucalyptus, which have been used widely in medicine in the past, are being looked at again as serious alternatives to the current leading pharmaceuticals. Many of the natural antibiotics on our list are currently being researched for their potential in fighting cancer and other diseases. Existing studies, as well as traditional healing methods used by many cultures all over the world, have shown the potential and promise of natural remedies to treat everything from the most minor discomforts to serious medical complaints.
As science catches up with tradition and we begin to understand more about how these wonderful botanical healers work by identifying their active ingredients and medical constituents, both holistic and orthodox medical practitioners are beginning to use natural remedies with greater efficacy and success.
This eBook will examine 30 of the most powerful natural antibiotics that can relieve the symptoms of minor illnesses without the use of medical antibiotics. Furthermore, while the use of these botanical healers may be a long way off in some cases to being widely used to treat more serious conditions, there is certainly a lot to suggest that including some of them in your diet can help to prevent certain diseases from developing and can improve your overall health.
In addition to our concerns about antibiotic resistance, many of us value natural remedies in their own right, not wishing to always reach for the chemical solution when something is out of balance in our bodies. This eBook will reveal the rich histories of the thirty most powerful natural antibiotics and not only identify their active ingredients and medical properties, but also give an insight into how and why all of these botanical healers have been used for so long in the medical practices of so many cultures throughout history and around the world. You may be surprised to find that some of the natural antibiotics on our list have played an important role in Western medical history and that many are surely to play important roles in future medications.
So whether you are somebody with a preference for the organic, somebody who feels something is missing from their current course of treatment, a lover of tradition, or even someone who simply has an open mind and an interest in traditional and holistic medical practice, then this eBook is certainly for you. It is an excellent first read for anybody wishing to gain an insight into the world of holistic medicine. It offers a wonderful overview of not only the natural healers themselves, but also of the culture surrounding them and includes guides on how to find holistic practitioners, information about how to prepare your natural remedies, lists by botanical remedy and by condition, and much more.
This eBook will begin with an overview of alternative medicine, followed by some information about the three main bodies of biologically based alternative medicine: homeopathy, aromatherapy, and herbalism. The book will then look at our top 30 natural antibiotics first by category (plant, herb, spice, oil, and miscellaneous) and then by the conditions which can be improved by these natural antibiotics. We will then look at some combined therapies which use a blend of these natural ingredients for the treatment of particular symptoms, before taking a look at how our natural ingredients can be prepared for medical use, and finally giving some information about where to buy items from our list in the UK and US.
By the time you have finished this eBook, you should have a confident knowledge base of the thirty most powerful natural antibiotics, their uses and health benefits, and also know how to prepare them yourself at home or how to find a local practitioner for further information and advice.

Chapter 1 – Alternative Medicine
According to Medline Plus, which is a service provided by the US National Library of Health, complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM, describes any medical practice or treatment that is not part of standard care. Standard care is described as the care provided by medical doctors and allied health professionals.
Complementary medicine, on the other hand, is any medical practice or treatment which is used alongside standard medical care. So who is using alternative medicine?
According to a report published by The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 40% of adult Americans and 12% of American children make use of some form of alternative medicine.
This means that despite any controversy surrounding the use of alternative or complementary medicine, many of us believe that such treatments have at least some positive effect on health.
Alternative medicine generally falls into five recognized categories:
Alternative medical systems
This refers to medical practices with a historical foundation, such as traditional Chinese medicine or homeopathy. These medical systems, although not always clinically proven, tend to be well-established and widely recognized as having some measurable benefit to health.
Mind-body medicine
This refers to non-physical practices designed to bring the mind and body into alignment. Many of these therapies hold that emotional health can help heal the body. Mind-body medicine includes practices such as meditation or yoga.
Energy medicine
This refers to practices which use invisible forces to heal the body such as chakras, reiki, or crystal healing. These are sometimes known as biofield therapies and can range from spiritual treatments to the use of magnets to restore balance to the body.
Manipulative and body-based practices
These are practices which use stimulation of certain parts of the body to improve overall health. This can include treatments such as massage, acupuncture, and reflexology.
Biologically based practices
These are the practices which use natural ingredients such as herbs, plants, and spices as a form of therapy and treatment. This can include taking dietary supplements to improve general health or using a traditional natural remedy to relieve the symptoms of a complaint.
This eBook will focus largely on the fifth type of alternative medicine, which is the use of natural products to improve health and relieve symptoms. It is in this category that we will find most of our top 30 natural antibiotics. Many of these treatments have strong scientific studies which evidence their effectiveness, while others are
