Chapter 1 – The Benefits of Indoor Gardening
How many times have you found yourself thinking that you wish you had a garden, but, you just don’t have the space or you think you can’t because you live in an apartment. Throw those excuses out with the canned goods and get ready to have your own garden no matter where you live, how bad the soil is, or how little space you have. By the end of this book you will be an indoor gardening expert.
With indoor gardening you can have fresh home grown vegetables and herbs throughout the year; yes, even in the cold and blistery winter time when plants outside where plants will freeze and not produce a harvest. There are not a whole lot of restrictions as to what you can do with an indoor garden and this book is going to show you exactly how to be eating fresh vegetables while your neighbors are still buying canned goods.
In the next few sections and throughout this chapter you will learn more about the health benefits of indoor gardening.
Healthier Eating
Not only is having an indoor garden fun it is also beneficial to your health and well being. You will be eating fresh produce that doesn’t have a bunch of chemicals sprayed on it and it isn’t coated with a layer of thin wax to make it look more appealing like they do in a lot of super markets.
You will also know exactly where it was grown and what process it went through to get to the table. That means no added preservatives to keep it fresh
in the can for several years. You also won’t be filling your body with loads of salt that are a big part of those preservatives. These things alone can help your well being and keep you healthier. This can help to cut down on the heart health risk related to sodium intake and eating fatty foods.
Quality Air in Your Home
If you remember your science classes from school then you know that all plants filter the air that surrounds them. Through the filtration the plants will absorb gases in the air. These gases include formaldehyde, benzene, acetone, xylene, chloroform, and trichloroethylene. These gases can come from paint, stains, varnishes, particle board, and caulking compounds. Other elements that can put bad chemicals into the air of your home are ceiling tiles, cigarettes, detergents, carpeting, and electric-photographic printers.
In just twenty-four hours plants are capable of removing 87% of the air toxins. After absorbing the bad gases in the air the plant then emits oxygen into the air. Plants will also increase the amount of humidity in the air creating oxygen-rich air in your home which will keep you, your children, and the family pets healthier. According to NASA the English ivy is the top of the list of plants that improve air quality in a home or office.
Induce Happiness
It may sound a little too good, but, it is true; plants make people happier. The simple task of caring for a plant and nurturing it can have a profound effect on how people think of themselves. It produces a feeling of worthiness because even though it may be just watering a plant occasionally; they are taking care of another living thing.
Learning Opportunities
All plants are different and they will require different things to thrive. Growing
