Chapter 1 – The history of crochet
In order to look at the history and origin of crochet, it is important to understand what crochet is.
Crochet
Crochet is the name that is given to a process that constitutes creating fabric from threads, yarn and or different material strands using a specialized tool called a crochet hook.
Crochet is a French name that means hook. The crochet hooks can be made from a variety of materials such as:
Wood
Metal
Plastic
The hooks are usually mass produced commercially as well as being specially commissioned by many artists.
Crochet is a pastime, similar to knitting as both have the same characteristics which consists of pulling loops of material through other loops, however crochet also sees the individual wrapping the material that they are working with around the hook one or more times.
Where did crochet originate from?
Studies leave us to believe that crochet came from practices that were undertaken in South America, Iran or China however there is no solid evidence to prove that the art of crochet was performed prior to its popularity being obvious in Europe through the 19th century. It is believed that the first written evidence of crochet was a reference made by Elizabeth Grant in the 19th century with reference to the slip stitch crochet.
In years gone by crochet hooks were said to be used by the poor Irish lace workers and these were constructed from inexpensive needles which were crafted into a handle made of cork to a multitude of far more expensive models crafted from silver, brass, ivory etc which were designed to show off the ladies hands rather than the thread that they were working with.
The Victorian Era
The end of the Victorian Era in 1890s saw the fashion in crochet changing, with the crocheted laces in the Edwardian era peaking about 1920 and these were far more elaborate in texture and comprised of a number of complicated stitches. Gone were the strong Victorian colors and in their place were white or pale threads with the exception of the constructed of fancy purses which were predominately crocheted using brightly colored silk thread and elaborate beads.
From the end of World War 1 very few crochet patterns were published and the ones that were comprised of simplified versions of the early 20th century patterns. The late 1940s through until 1960s saw a renewed interest in home crafts particularly in the United States with a multitude of new crochet designs being published for
