Your Destination Is on the Right
Glen L. Bledsoe
Light bled through the bottle-green clouds and painted the wet road in emerald hues. It worried him. As a kid he’d seen clouds like these just before tornadoes. And there was nowhere to hide out here on a country road, nothing but cornstalks as far as the eye could see. None of the tornados he’d ever read about had taken anyone anywhere as nice as Oz. Fortunately there was no sign of a funnel cloud—yet. In the distance lightning etched the sky with brilliant lines, and a second later he felt the full rumble of thunder, something he’d forgotten about living on the West Coast for over three decades.
He liked the sizzle of tires on wet blacktop. It relaxed him. Made him think of days gone by. Years slipped by without notice until you found yourself in the here and now wondering just how you’d gotten there. And how you’d suddenly grown old.
He turned off the car’s air conditioner, rolled down the window, and sucked in hot, humid Hoosier air, smelled the rain, lightning bugs, and wet blacktop. Rain flecked his glasses and dampened his short, gray beard. This was the part of the world where his father was born. The southern half of the state wasn’t just a geographical location but a separate culture and mind-set. His mother used to tell him, Those people are twenty years behind the times,
and they were. When he was a boy in the sixties, he couldn’t understand why his grandmother heated her home with a coal stove parked in the living room when his own house just two hundred miles to the north had modern central heating.
