    Alan and Fred fed so much through the machines that Alan felt like he was mining for gold.

    Gold that isn’t there, Alan thought to himself as he fed another round of clothing, dirt, fabric, and debris into the machine. The piles of material sat in the corner of the otherwise sterile-looking room, that dropped occasionally from a large chute that hung from the ceiling and landed in large metal bins sitting on the floor. Material like this, some of it 20 or 30 years old, was hard to come by. The world was a much cleaner place now, the junkyards and landfills cleaned up, waste practically a thing of the past.
