    In Cedar Falls it was one of those rainy days that Jack’s Uncle Teddy called a real bleeder. In the morning, as he ate a bowl of Frosted Flakes, the sky had been gunmetal gray shading to an ugly green in the distance. By the time his parents has left for Aunt Helen’s in Bloomsdale a light drizzle had started to fall from the sky, the kind of patter that might hold the promise of more to come, or might just be an empty threat. By the time the digital clock on the cable box hit noon the threat had proved to be all too real, and the rain was pouring down so hard and fast that even old Noah would’ve found little comfort in his boat.

    Jack thought about seeing if maybe Kyle or Justin wanted to come over, but on second thought he dismissed the idea. Their parents probably wouldn’t want to drive them over in the downpour, but the real reason was that
