    Chapter 1: My Miserable Summer

By summer, I was miserably happy. My stomach had grown bigger than I ever could have imagined, and I was beginning to wonder if it would ever stop. Despite attempts at controlling the stretch marks on both sides of my stomach, my skin refused to let them fade, and they only got bigger. I could no longer see my feet, and I often felt like a penguin waddling around on swollen ankles. My weight gain hadn’t been as extreme as some women, but I had put on 35 pounds thanks to mother constantly nagging me to eat more. The cravings hadn’t helped very much either, but my doctor told me it wouldn’t be a problem. The baby growing inside of me occasionally gave a little kick, reminding me that it wouldn’t be very much longer until it would be in my arms.

With Mark’s help, I had been keeping up with my classes very well. He was very insistent on helping me whenever necessary, and I had managed to maintain my 3.8 GPA through winter and spring. People on campus never stopped giving me judgmental looks. Although, some people would always ask to touch my stomach. It usually made me a little uncomfortable, but I never refused. I wasn’t ashamed, and I didn’t care too much about what other people were thinking about me. If anyone asked me where the father was, I would just smile and shrug.
