DEDICATION
I dedicate this book to the eminent livestock and dog handlers throughout the years that have taught me to move livestock gently, quietly and efficiently, and to educate my dogs and horses to do the same. My dad and my uncle Glen were the first two, and they were both excellent stockmen. To Murray Young who started me on the British style of handling dogs. Also to others too numerous to mention that have added knowledge throughout the years.

Take the time to read this.
One cannot become a good teacher without learning, and it is difficult to learn without teaching.
J. Willis Hurst
First and foremost in investing money or in training an animal, compounding is essential. With the money, it’s compound interest. With teaching it’s compound teaching, teaching the same thing over and over again. To get the maximum benefit of your investment, which in training your dog is your time and energy, use it correctly, and the learning will compound by repeating it over and over.
In this manual, there is such an abundance of information that a novice trying to absorb it all at once can really be overwhelmed. It certainly takes time. Reading this manual, all at once, is certainly good but to learn a great deal from the book, you must study each section. If your dog is ready to start training, do not put it off, fifteen minutes to one half hour a day, often less, is a small dedication for the time saved and the less stress and frustration on yourself and your livestock in the future. It takes a very limited amount of time to compound into a significant amount of learning.
In this manual, I will attempt to help the stock handlers that have been frustrated by stock dogs that keep running around the herd and pushing the stock back towards them. By harnessing this energy properly, these dogs can be the utmost helpers in the proper handling of livestock. This book will show you how to teach the stock dogs to work for you and with you. Give them a chance. Stock-dogs have a natural ability to read livestock. Humans need to learn to read animals, and to them, it never comes naturally. If you work at it hard and compound your understanding, studying the stock and your dog you can develop stock-sense, never to the point of being able to read the livestock as efficiently as a good stock dog, but decently.
In this book, you will find a primary guide showing how to teach the dog, and if you are having a problem re-read the manual or just the part where you are having a problem. If you still don’t seem to get the results you expect you can email Ron at mview@telusplanet.net, and look for his answer at BergenRanch.com, and check training tips
dogs towards the bottom of the first page. Any teaching problem is merely a communication problem between you and your dog.
If you have a problem, it’s likely your dog simply doesn’t understand what you want.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH BY UTILIZING THIS PUBLICATION
REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU ARE TEACHING YOUR DOG, OR IF YOU ARE GETTING YOUR DOG EDUCATED BY A PROFESSIONAL TRAINER. - LEARN THE TRAINING PROCEDURES.
Throughout this book, I have used the male gender, both in reference to canine and human, unless referring to a particular animal or person, and this is no preference of mine and is simply a form of convenience.
This reference guide is to help train handlers to teach stock dogs properly. If you are purchasing a trained dog, a started dog, or a puppy, you can use this publication to help you with, at least, some of the training problems you may encounter. You have the raw material, the putty so to speak, and you can use your abilities to mold this putty any way you wish. The putty (raw material) in this case is your dog, mold him wisely. A foolish handler cannot get the true potential from
