Chapter One
Logan circled the perimeter for the second time that night. His highly competent beta had already secured the area and stationed the paw patrol at strategic points, but Logan wasn’t satisfied. His gut told him trouble was coming and his animal instincts had never let him down before. As the Alpha of the Maccon pack, the buck stopped with him and he felt compelled to ensure everyone’s safety.
Security was usually not an issue. The acres of timberland in New England provided more than enough space for two wolf packs to live in close proximity, yet maintain their distance. It wasn’t always so peaceful. In the early years, a feud between the Hemmings and the Maccons escalated to all-out war. No one could remember the inciting incident, but it didn’t take much to set off a pack of headstrong wolves.
As the number of shifters decreased, thanks to hunters, infertility, and segregation, the wolves became more suspicious, even of their own kind. Shunned by humans, most shifters chose to live as their ancestors did. They stuck close to their pack, didn’t deal with strangers and they subsisted by hunting, gathering, and simple farming.
Wolf shifters believed if their pack was large, they were less likely to be attacked. Reproduction became their number one priority. The Hemming Pack romanticized the old ways and would do anything to preserve their traditional society and increase their numbers, but along the way, they became bigoted and homophobic. They did horrible things. Things that Logan didn’t agree with, like ostracizing those who were different.
Logan respected tradition, but he didn’t feel bound by it. He embraced technology and accepted everyone. Most of all, he tried to accept himself and embrace his sexuality—as a gay man. It wasn’t easy because fate had other plans for Logan.
His father was alpha before him and the title passed from father to son. A muscular six–foot–six, Logan looked the part and his fighting skills were well known, but he took no pleasure in taking down other men. A pacifist by nature, he fought when he needed to, to protect his people.
When his father died, Logan slipped easily into the role of leader, and he loved doing it. It pained him to stay in the closet, but
