    Origination of the Paleo Diet

    Also referred to as the caveman or stone-age diet, the ever popular Paleolithic diet that so many have tried today may not have always been one of the more fashionable diets, but the core of its existence can certainly be dated back to thousands of years ago. We are talking even older than some of the famous ancient ancestors we know about from sitting in history class.

    The definition of Paleo means older or ancient, coined from the idea that we should be eating more like our ancient ancestors did back, way back, in the day. The diet is based on the concept of avoiding not just processed meats, but also foods that humans did not start consuming until after the Neolithic Revolution, when humans took the step from being hunter-gathers to practicing contemporary approaches, such as agriculture.

    Our cave(wo)men cousins took to the grave the exact time that this diet originated from originally. But a couple of important gentlemen were responsible for bringing this diet to life in modern day society.

    In the year 1913, Joseph Knowles conducted experiments that cemented the ideas that make up this alternative regime. The experiments that took place by Knowles were researching and documenting hunting and gathering practices that it has been said our cave dwelling ancestors used to survive. The interesting thing about his studies was that he himself went out into the wild, and instead of living off the instincts we as humans practice more so today, he lived instead off the forest, finding whatever range of fruits and vegetables the land provided him. Once back from his journey into the past, he received many a compliment of how strong and fit he appeared.

    The first individual who actually conceived the actual name of the Paleo diet was a man named Walter L. Voegtin, a gastroenterologist that wrote a book called The Stone Age Diet back in the year 1975. Voegtin grappled with the concept that humans are born carnivorous creatures, and naturally seek out things to consume that keep them healthy, all the while keeping them strong enough to physically live through life’s endeavors.
