    Chapter 1

Maxeal saw the small shimmering pool of light in front of him and ran. They were back again. Looking back over his shoulder as he ran, Maxeal counted at least six players appearing out of the teleportation pool. He’d need to warn the others. Running in the direction of the closest tunnel entrance, he avoided a potion bottle that flew over his head. Pulling out his bow, Maxeal paused, turned, and dropped to one knee. Firing a shot, he watched as it hit a player, sending him tumbling to the ground. It looked like the arrow tips they’d been testing had worked. They’d thought their new armor was invincible, but now he’d proved otherwise. Grinning to himself, Maxeal knew that now wasn’t the time to celebrate. That could come later. Getting back up, he ran the rest of the way as fast as he could. Once inside, he decided to go against his previous thought. Running for help would be the better choice right now, but he knew he couldn’t afford to give away their new location. Not after all the work they’d put into it. Turning to the left instead of the right, Maxeal led his pursuer’s further underground. Running for his life, he heard their curses behind him. It sounded like they weren’t taking kindly to losing a player. Coming to the spot where he knew the booby trap was, Maxeal jumped over the pressure plate and kept running. They’d be sorry they’d come after him.

Hearing the first small TNT explosion, Maxeal slowed his run. He could imagine the mess his little trap had caused. A pressure plate linked to a TNT block, had just blown away a weakened ceiling. Now his pursuers were standing under a river of lava. Grinning to himself, he knew they’d probably give up. Deep underground and losing two, maybe three players, they’d quickly realize that their mission was over and go home. For how long he couldn’t be sure. Maybe they’d stay away longer than last time. Realizing that he was still holding his bow, Maxeal put it away and took out his sword. Anything he was going to meet now would be coming from the front. He could forget those behind him. Walking on a little more, Maxeal decided to continue on his path and double back later. He couldn’t afford to have any eyes see where he went. Pausing for a second, he heard a movement ahead. Was it a zombie or a creeper? It wasn’t surprising that he’d meet something down here. They’d purposely avoided putting many torches in these tunnels. Torches had their uses, but nothing gave away your location better than a brightly lit tunnel. Holding his breath Maxeal waited. Any second now and it would be coming around the corner. Crouching in an attack position he waited and held out his sword. Grinning to himself he thought that if it were a zombie, he’d let it walk into the tip of his sword and kill itself. Those things were just so dumb. A creeper though, would be a different story altogether. But he’d still be ready for it.

Holding his position Maxeal waited. It should have come his way by now, he thought. Maybe it hadn’t realized he was here and had just ambled off in the opposite direction. Hearing nothing more, he decided to risk a look. Even if it was there, he still had the upper hand. Picking the right moment, he charged around the corner. It wasn’t what he’d expected to
