WINGS
by
EMMANUEL ASADU
I wish to note the efforts of everybody who contributed to the creation of WINGS; it wouldn’t have been possible without them. I thank the staff of Samajef cyber café, my mother who supported me when it was still an idea, and my special friend, Nicole who pushed me to take my idea to realization.
For my Mother; for my friend Gabriella who encouraged me never to give up & my dear sister who critiqued my work.
Most importantly, my God who gave me the grace to write this book.
CHAPTER ONE
I was hungry, sweaty and tired; bruises and sores decorated the soles of my feet but I had to keep going. I had not the slightest idea how long I could endure this journey. My head ached and it felt like it had been split in two then sewn back together.
As I expected but not hoped for, my legs gave up when they couldn’t bear my weight any more and I didn’t blame them for it
‘Maria, Maria, get up… get the fuck up, Maria.’
I knew Esther was right, I had to get up but I wished she had said so in a pitch lower, it felt like my brain was about to leave the confines of my skull. My pain – I knew I had only two options. Either I stand up and keep going or I give in to my pain and die like an animal.
I knew what I had to do; I mustered all the strength I still had at that moment to pick myself up and keep moving. ‘You can survive this…’ I muttered.
Esther’s voice kept nagging me to quit this ‘suicide’ mission of mine and end it all, but I knew I couldn’t give in to her voice. I looked up into the night sky and I thought to myself, maybe she’s right, maybe I had to end it all…
As if the stars heard me, my answer materialized. It was staring me in the face and I finally saw reason in what she was saying. End this ‘suicide’ mission and go home!
These were Esther’s exact words… that word. I hadn’t had any reason to think about that word in a long time. That word brought back so many memories that I could not afford to reminisce about… because I could not afford to lose all the courage I had. I remembered the roasted lamb chops and the smiles of Mum, Dad and Nanny Judith on Christmas mornings back home; the awfully long choir recitals at church which lasted for what seemed like an eternity … but I had lost all of that in a single day. And then it happened, I could feel a tear roll down my cheeks but this time it was different, this time it was like my heart cried with me. Surprisingly it felt good.
I used the lower portion of my shirt to wipe the tears from my sullied face, and continued my journey. Esther had been quiet for a while, and I was beginning to worry that I was beginning to lose my only friend. I needed her at that moment because I was scared half to death when I thought about what I was about to do and I why I was doing it. Maybe the screeching and hollering of the jungle people had swallowed her voice.
‘Do it, it’s our only option, death is better than going back there…’
That familiar nagging voice had come back louder than ever, this time reminding me of what I had to do; I had to embrace the grim reaper. At such a time, I would have loved a shot of liquid courage, the kind they served back at hell.
‘Hell …
