    CHAPTER 1

FBI Special Agent Robert Bixby had arrived in Chesapeake Bay feeling disgruntled, hungover, and starving for some home-cooked food. His dream of the unspoilt views, the warm sunshine, and navigating the endless series of fishing boats along the water had been the only thing keeping him going. Sailing helped to still the constant mind chatter he was plagued with his whole life. Whichever demons lurked in the recesses of his mind were completely integrated.

His longed-for weekend of fishing and watching the sunset was now on hold. Instead, he was headed for the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Station.

Sheriff Kim Chastain had received a call from the front desk at the Wayfarer’s Inn about a deceased guest in one of their rooms. The owners were out of town, so she’d be calling in on their Manager, Marvin instead. Sheriff Chastain had asked for the FBI’s assistance with the case, given the County’s limited resources and lack of an operational Coroner’s office for some time.

I hope you’ve got an empty stomach. It’s pretty rank. Sheriff Chastain guided Robert towards her car to drive him the few minutes ride to the Motel.

I’m not worried on that score. Robert looked around the impeccably clean vehicle. Sheriff Chastain pulled up outside the Wayfarer’s Inn as they both watched the crime scene tape and cordon being installed. The exterior had worn well but the state of the rooms was appalling, hence the cheap hourly rate.

Robert’s partner, Marcello Robbani was already interviewing the housekeeping personnel while technicians worked around the body. Marcello looked up as Robert stepped into white booties, pulled them over his shoes and entered a few steps behind the Sheriff.

The victim was discovered when housekeeping turned up to clean the room. Marcello stared at Sheriff Chastain who stared at the corpse and then looked away. Her face was pale with shock while she consulted her notes.

Female, late twenties. Bled out after an incredibly sharp instrument slashed the carotid artery. No ligature marks or defensive wounds. The room’s been stripped. No bedding or towels were found. Sheriff Chastain looked at Robert, who was unusually silent.

I’m going to find out what they know about the victim at the Front Desk. Marcello walked away.

Robert stared at the victim, a strawberry blonde. Fake nails painted coral pink to match the hue of the stencilled-on nipples on her fake breasts. He’d seen many murder victims in his career but this was one of the most gruesome due to the volume of blood loss. The A.C. had been turned low, and the drapes pulled closed to cut down the morning’s heat from the sun’s rays.

Marcello walked away from the cashier at the front desk and joined Robert who noted that there were no signs of forced entry. There were personal items still in the room, and a wad of dollar bills next to the lamp told him this wasn’t a robbery but he didn’t have any interest in the
