    Chapter 1 - Asha

Going back to the reserve didn’t feel like I was home. I had hoped it would be the same as it was before I left.

I didn’t know why I’d thought it was even possible.

The reserve looked the same as always, of course. It looked exactly the way it had when I’d left. But what it looked like didn’t matter when everything was different.

Where are you going to live? Miath asked me as we walked through the gates. The water talents at the gate looked at me like they were seeing a ghost.

I’ll stay with Kira, if she’ll have me.

Miath frowned at me. Who’s Kira?

I stopped and looked at him. He was genuinely confused. I could feel it, like a fog around his mind. He didn’t know her. She was my daughter – every fae had to know her. She was the closest thing the fae could ever get to royalty.

You don’t know who Kira Limber is?

Miath hesitated a moment before he shook his head. He looked apologetic, like he felt he should have known. He should have, too. But this wasn’t just about the fact that he didn’t know who Kira was. It was about Muriel Bluegrain and how she’d run my reserve into the ground. If they didn’t know who Kira was...

Do you know all the fae who live here?

I knew the answer to the question before I asked it. Of course, Miath would know them all. The fae all knew each other, or of each other. We were big as far as communities went, but we were a close one.

I kept thinking of the fae in the reserve as ‘we’, as if I was still part of it. I was aware that it wasn’t the case.

I continued walking. If Kira wasn’t known, it meant she wasn’t here.

Who is she? Miath asked, jogging to keep up with me.

    My daughter.

Miath didn’t say anything and we walked on for a while in silence. I came to the house where I used to live. It had been in the middle of the reserve, close to the Great Hall.

This is Muriel’s place, Miath said when I stopped at the foot of the path that led to the front door. Of course, Muriel would have claimed it for herself after she’d assumed the position of ruler in the reserve.

Had she driven someone out to live here?

Miath wouldn’t know, of course. He was too young. This had been before his time. I’d left the reserve long before I’d been captured.

I don’t know... he sounded unsure and he wanted to go home. The reluctance to get involved radiated off him. I turned to him. His watery eyes were confident and sure, his new-found power making him a bigger man than he was before. I could see it in him even though I hadn’t known him before the whole episode with Raven had happened. Miath had come into his power while we were at Forechester Keep.

He deserved to relax, to settle in who he was, to lick his wounds after the little witch had dumped him. This was not his fight.

Go home, I said. I’ll be fine.

He hesitated again like he wasn’t sure he should believe me, but he took his chance anyway and nodded before he left me standing alone in front of my home. In front of Muriel’s home.

Kira had stayed when I’d left the reserve. I had chosen to leave, but Muriel had portrayed it like I’d been banished in her favor. She’d made it look like I’d been so bad as a ruler I wasn’t fit for the position anymore.

Kira hadn’t agreed with everything I’d done back then – I had been a lot more liberal than the others were – and because of her non-committal behavior toward me and my actions, she’d been allowed to remain.

Judging by what it was like now, the fact that I could search the entire reserve and not pick up on her life force at all, told me what I suspected when Miath mentioned our home belonged to Muriel.

    Kira had left the reserve.

I was surprised, but not angry. I understood it. I would have done the same. In fact, I had. I’d taken a more aggressive approach, fighting for what was right in a way fae had never done. Kira must have done the opposite and gone underground.

She was a spirit talent, like me. It meant that she had the power to look after herself. I didn’t know where she was, but I didn’t have to be worried. It was one less thing, at least.

Right now, though, I had to look for a place to stay. I needed to make my way back into the reserve. I needed to find my feet again.

I walked away from the place I once called home and followed the path around the circle of houses that belonged to the families of the council. They appointed homes to each one of them, and the places were always strategically situated so that it took the least amount of time to be where they needed to be.

North Vale was an old friend – he’d been more than a friend, once – and I knew his home would be open for me. It had always been. I was sure he wouldn’t have changed, too. A man as solid and strong as he was had to be the same as always.

It didn’t take me long to get to the home where I spent time as a teenager. Back in the day when we were both young and stupid and unaware of our power and of what it could do for the world, North and I had planned a future together. Our paths had gone in such opposite directions it was almost impossible now to think how in love we were.

I climbed the three small steps to the front door and knocked. It was getting dark. The fae were supposed to be in their homes by now – if anything was still the way it used to be before I left. A visitor would be a little out of place at this time.

The door opened and a young woman stood in front of me. Waist-length white hair and eyes the color of fire. North’s eyes.

    Hello, I said.

The woman frowned slightly. Do I know you?

I smiled. I don’t think so. It’s... been a while since I’ve been around these parts.

She looked over her shoulder and then stepped to the side. North appeared next to her. When he saw me, he paled just a little. His face was tired, older than I remembered, and he wasn’t as upright and strong as I remembered. But the same fire was still in his eyes.

Thank you, Amber. You can go help your mother.

The young woman nodded, looked at me one more time and disappeared.

She’s grown up, I said.  The last time I’d seen her, Amber was only a little girl.

You won’t believe it. Feisty, too.

I chuckled. I could imagine it. If she’s anything like her father...

I let my voice trail off and
