For one who has a mediocre vocabulary, although college educated and 74 yo, I continue to desire to strengthen my vocabulary and other brain skills. This practical textbook/vocabulary builder/study guide for the GRE is excellent. Each of the 1535 essential words have its pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, plus a sentence using the word in context. There are tests in the book as well as online practice tests. Plus there are answer 'keys' for each word's practice tests. Overall, I found this to give me a substantial grasp of the targeted vocabulary word as well as ways to decipher which words I need to practice more. The publishers' reassurance that these 1535 words will cover the words tested on the GRE give me confidence that I will have enough under my belt in order to take the test...that is, IF I will do my part and STUDY!

This is a small dictionary of 1535 words for vocabulary building. A commerical dictionary would be more useful in the long run but if you want to focus, here is a list. But there is no discussion of how the words were chosen and you might be studying the wrong list. I received a review copy of this book directly from the publisher through Library Thing Early Reviewers.

I really liked this book. It is helpful when getting ready for college entrance exams, but also, it is also good to learn new words everyday. This book can help with that. Especially words you may not understand. I recommend this book!

This is an excellent collection of vocabulary words not only for the GRE but for life in general. They are words you run into in journalism, fiction, listening to the news—it’s a great preparatory book.
