      Introduction

      Ten years ago I found myself sitting at home, lonely and bored and questioning if I had done the right thing by separating from my husband. We had been married for 26 years, and dated for four years before that. I had not been with another man in 30 years! And now on this lonely night I was wondering if it would be like this for the rest of my life. I wanted to meet people and have fun, and even find a new love, but I didn’t know how to make that happen. All of my friends had been ‘our’ friends, and looking back I realized I hadn’t done much during a busy marriage to cultivate deep friendships. I certainly had no single friends. I didn’t know where to meet other single people. There were bars, but I had never been the type to go into bars by myself. And I missed my kids who were away in college. I thought I had set myself up for a very, very reclusive life.

      On that lonely weekend night as I was looking at my email, counting the hours till Monday morning when I could go back to work, I saw an ad at the bottom of the screen saying something about dating people from a website. That seemed weird, sort of like the ‘man searching for woman’ ads that I passed in the newspaper classifieds when looking at real estate ads. Online dating was brand new back then. But I clicked it anyway- I was all too aware that I was by myself and no one would know. And was I surprised!

      I saw pictures and pictures of good-looking people and they seemed normal! Actually, nice. Ordinary people like me were saying they’d like to meet other people! Wow! Could it really be that easy and that open! The more I clicked through the pictures and read about each person, the more excited I became. There WAS a way to meet people! Good, exciting, fun people! That night, the world opened up and my life changed course.

      I started emailing the people on the site, arranging lunches and dinners and soon began a fun social life! I met wonderful people, all with their own stories. They were interesting and pleasant. The important thing was that I was back in the world! Meeting and talking to new people! No more that lonely, sad woman sitting at home by herself. I was having fun!

      Within a few short months I met the person who truly swept me off my feet! Someone who was unbelievably amazing and who fit everything I was looking to find. We became exclusive and comfortably moved into a serious relationship. I couldn’t believe there could be another person in the world who could be so important to me… not after having been married for so long. I’m happy to say that I have been with this man for ten years and he is now my husband.
