    From behind the coffeehouse service counter, the barista hollered, One espresso at the pick-up window.

    Roger pushed his chair back and pegged his way to the counter. He didn’t need the walking stick; there was nothing wrong with his legs. But Walt Whitman had used one, saying it helped him to explore the natural world that he wrote about so eloquently. If a walking stick was good for Whitman, it was good enough for Roger.

    He collected the miniscule white china cup and saucer from the pick-up window and carried them to his table, taking care not to spill
