Author

Sue Whitaker

Sue admits to being a ‘big kid’ herself and likes nothing more than walking in the rain and splashing in puddles (if no one is looking). The inspiration for most of her writing come from spending time in the North York Moors. The region where both her 'And Other Tales' short stories and the ‘And Jake Makes Three’ series of books are set. Sue is passionate about animal welfare and conservation to protect natural habitats. Her writing is compared to best selling author's such as Enid Blyton and Jeffrey Archer to name a few.

    Foreword

This is one of the most wonderful books I have had the pleasure to read in many years. When I first began reading it I planned to read just the first chapter and return to it later but after I had, I just had to read the next, and then the one after that. Each story is a delightful look through the keyhole of the many and varied characters that we find in the fascinating world of the charity shop. This book warmed my heart and in many cases moved me. It reminds me in some ways of the fantastic book A Twist in The Tale by Jeffery Archer and is just as compelling.

I have found myself in the past buying clothes for myself from the various charity shops around Leeds where I live, and it struck a chord with me. I would often pick up the odd expensive Italian shirt that had been donated to the shop which delighted me, but my very favourite item was a tartan kilt. A tartan kilt which I would then wear in the many dance clubs I used to frequent and which found itself inside the covers of DJ Mag.; a magazine for clubbers that I used to read back in the nineties. I don‘t suppose any of the readers would have had any idea that the kilt had been purchased from a charity shop.

This book also touches me personally for a different reason: My close and sadly missed sister Sonia spent almost her entire life visiting almost every charity shop in Yorkshire, or so it seemed, and was always able to find the most interesting things.

When she died she had the largest collection of perfume dispensers which I had ever seen, which she had collected over the years. She loved charity shops, and she would have loved this book.

It’s been said about many a great book, but I’m afraid once again it feels completely appropriate to apply it to this book too, as its true: I couldn’t put it down. Sit down, put your feet up, relax and enjoy reading Another Man’s Trousers as much as I did.Richard McCann Sunday Times No1 Bestselling Author of Just a Boy

    Preface

Whilst the stories within this collection are all true, the names of the different charities, along with the names of the characters who work and volunteer for them, have been changed. The locations have been altered only when necessary to protect their identity further. Some of the tales occurred many years ago, while others have been fairly recent. I have intentionally mixed the timelines of the tales to add variety to the collection.

If anyone who is mentioned in the tales that follow, does recognise themselves, I hope they will take the inclusion of their story as a compliment and an appreciation of our time spent together.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank all the area and business development managers that I have worked with over the years, without whom, I would not have been given the opportunity or inspiration to write this book. Thank you for taking a punt.

I would also like to thank everyone at ETA Publishing House for their patience and belief in my writing.

Thank you to my support team at work, who unfortunately have to remain anonymous, although you all know who you are. I have to say that without you I would still be lost.

Thank you to Richard McCann for a brilliant foreword – tagged to this is an apology for all my pushy emails.

Lastly, to my husband Matthew for all his encouragement and for being my strength during times of weakness – a massive thank you.

    Introduction

When the time came for me at school to have the long awaited chat with a careers advisor, I did not proclaim that I had a burning desire to be a Charity Shop Manager.

While I was young and impressionable, I considered the whole spectrum of career opportunities, from Journalism to the Army. However, acquiring my first taste of charity retail came quite by chance. I did not realise at that time that the whole charity establishment would thereafter be at the forefront of everything I did for many years to come.

I now believe I have one of the best jobs in the world, a profound proclamation, but none-the-less, quite apt. For many years I have managed my own charity shops, but I have also spent a lot of time as a covering manager, standing in for long term sickness, maternity leave and general cases of management absence.

I see the charity shops which I have managed as a theatrical stage, with a different play production acted out there every single day.
