"Buddenbrooks: Verfall einer Familie" (1901) ist das früheste unter den großen Werken Thomas Manns und gilt heute als der erste Gesellschaftsroman in deutscher Sprache von Weltgeltung. Er erzählt vom allmählichen, sich über vier Generationen hinziehenden Niedergang einer wohlhabenden Kaufmannsfamilie und illustriert die gesellschaftliche Rolle und Selbstwahrnehmung des hanseatischen Großbürgertums in den Jahren von 1835 bis 1877.
Der Roman berichtet jedoch nicht nur vom Ende einer Familie, noch bezeichnet er bloß das Ende der literarischen Überlieferung, von der er selbst ein letztes großes Beispiel ist. Vielmehr weist er auch auf die schöpferischen Kräfte hin, die der Zusammenbruch der alten Ordnung freisetzt. Deshalb ist auch die solide Ordnung der dargestellten Welt weit davon entfernt, antiquiert zu sein. Der Essayist Erich Heller formulierte: "Indem die konventionelle Organisation des Werks die Idee einer Kunst in sich schließt, welche die Konvention zerbrechen muß, widerlegen die 'Buddenbrooks' auf höchst ironische Weise den Verdacht der Konventionalität."
Als Vorlage der Handlung diente Thomas Manns eigene Familiengeschichte. Schauplatz des Geschehens ist seine Heimatstadt Lübeck. Ohne dass der Name der Stadt ausdrücklich erwähnt wird, sind viele Nebenfiguren nachweislich literarische Porträts von Lübecker Persönlichkeiten jener Zeit.
