My Bad Boy Professor
Chapter 1: First Day of Class
It was the first day of the fall semester. The leaves had just started falling from the trees and every day got increasingly colder and windier. I made it a point to dress for a good first impression. I wore a light yellow cardigan tucked around me with a white camisole underneath, and blue-grey skinny jeans. I thought it would be a good idea to dress simple on my first day. I even went light on my makeup, too, although I didn’t skip highlighting my ebony cheekbones anyway. I wore my hair plain and straight, just past my shoulders.
I was new in town, and didn’t really have any friends. People seemed to all have their own interests in mind, and that was fine by me. I didn’t mind making friends slowly. It was a small town, so it had to happen eventually, right? I had my GPA on my mind more than anything. My grades had always been above average, and I was feeling confident enough even though it was a new school, new place. My anxious excitement could not be toned down.
My first class of the day was economics. Room 202 in the Social Sciences building, it didn’t take me very long to find. Up some stairs, down a hallway, and the second room to the right. There were a lot of people already seated and waiting, although the seats were only half filled. I took a seat at the middle table, second row. Slowly, more people, mostly girls around my age, funneled into the room in groups. By the time the professor entered the room, all of the seats were filled with overly cheerful white girls chirping to each other. There may have been a few guys, but very few.
The professor was fair skinned, perhaps as fair as they come. He was handsome by any woman’s standards. He wore a white button-up shirt and black slacks. His arms noticeably bulged underneath his long white sleeves. I wondered if he had toned abs. It seemed like a safe bet since his arms appeared to be so buff. He was tall, probably around 6’2" just by eyeing him. His hair was a sandy blonde color, and so was his peppery facial hair. His overall appearance was clean-cut, however. A wedding band shined on his ring finger as he shuffled through some papers. When he looked back up, his eyes lingered on me for a moment, the only African American girl in the room, before glancing away.
I am Mr. Moore. I’ll be your economics professor for the whole semester. I’m pretty strict, and I expect nothing less than an 80% average from this class,
he smiled. I’ve prepared a small introductory presentation for today. Enjoy,
he said, dimming the lights and turning on a projector by the desk. ‘Economics I’ filled the screen in an over-sized Comic Sans font.
He probably thought he was clever, adding all sorts of power point effects. He smiled occasionally, admiring his work, as it dragged on and on, covering all of the concepts the class would cover. Economics has never been a favorite subject of mine, and my eyes darted more or less away from the presentation and to him, standing beside the projector and occasionally glancing at his phone. His porcelain skin glowed under the dim lights as the light from the projector illuminated the white wall. I wondered what he was looking at on his phone. Maybe he was texting his wife or playing a casual game of mahjong, just passing time.
I tapped my pen against the blank notebook in front of me. It seemed pointless to take notes on such a silly presentation. The vast majority of the presentation was just bulleted lists and the professor talking in his steadily charismatic tone of voice about the general concept of the class. When it was finally over half an hour later, the lights came back on and the professor put his
