To my two sisters, Roni and Shiri,

and to my Grandmother and my Mom,

who revealed the world of Les Miserables to me.

And to, of-course, my cousins, who love swimming and

are always happy to do so.

I love all of you so, so much.

    Chapter 1

I never thought I’m weird. The thought never occurred to my mind. People always told me I’m different, but weird… not once.

I come from a family of seven kids, and one parent. Three of the kids are adopted-Oak, Texas, and Canyon. Yeah, we all have original names. My Mom is Aeron, and my older brother is Pacific. Then we have Canyon and Oak, which are inseparable. Jayden, Angel, and Texas. And me? I’m straight in between them all. After Canyon, before Jayden.

Meet… my family. Love them so much.

And meet me, Ivy, a red-headed, green-eyed slim figure that people call a girl.

I swim. I’m on the school team. I love it.

I woke up for a nice, bright first day of summer vacation. I went downstairs, smelling pancakes.

Good morning, hon, Mom kissed the top of my head as I walked by her. When the summer ends, you’ll be in high school, eh? The thought of high school sent a chill through me. I know where I’ll be going, but I’m afraid it’ll be hard, and my dyslexia, I’m sure, will not help. Oh, my little baby’s growing up, Mom said. She slid a plate from the mix n’ match china set, and slipped a pancake on to it.

Here you go, Oak passed the chocolate syrup. She was already dressed, and ready to go to work in the kiddy-camp. Oak’s eighteen. She has beautiful green eyes and thick dark hair, and she has chinese blood in her, too, which doesn’t make her less gorgeous.

I’m going to ride my bike, I announced, and Angel quickly jumped up.

    Me too! Me too!

Our bikes are old and rusty, since we can’t always have new ones. Mine is baby blue, and Angel’s is spray-painted bright pink. It used to be Pacific’s. We rode a bit, around the park, then we decided to go back home.

At home, I stood next to the piano, trying to dare put my fingers on the keys. Dad taught me how to play. It was one of the last things he did before I never saw him again.

Ivy Write! Come here this second! Pacific was calling me. I wonder what I had done wrong this time.

What? I grumbled when I got to his room, in the basement of the basement. We had a tall but very thin house; it had two basements, three regular floors, and an attic.

Did you, for heaven's sake, take my map of the world? I shook my head. His map is HUGE, and I can just come look if I need it.

As I made my way upstairs, Canyon-whose room is in the basement-stopped me.

Ivy, I need to talk to you. Canyon has the most beautiful old-fashion style. I love her room.

Yeah? I ask, brushing my hands on the softly painted locker-looking cabinet she has.

Ivy. Her voice was stern, filled with coldness. She was usually bright as the sunshine. I wanted to talk to you about high school. You need to know that-

I cut her off. I’ll be fine. I’m a big girl. Nobody can hurt me. It annoyed me she thinks I’m a little girl. Yeah, at seventeen, she might be older, but she’s no boss of mine. I don’t need any help. Swimmers fend for themselves.

Ivy, you don’t understand, you- I put my finger to my lips. Her voice grew dangerous and angry. I had better things to do than listen to people preach. I could swim in the lake that our porch runs into. I turn away. Ivy!

I’m already in my old blue-and-navy bathing suit when she comes running after me. She stares at the WRITE plastered on the back, and frowned.

I dived. I thought I saw a few tears splashing on the scratched, faded wood, then on her bare feet.

    What have I done?

    Chapter 2

A week or two passed… who cares. All I did was swim, dive, dive, swim. Sometimes with my siblings, but usually alone.

I woke up, and no one was home. So I went to my favorite place
