Bound by Destiny - Magen McMinimy

    Truth: Guardian of Dream

...A beautiful, tricky, and dark vampire bore him to the world of the night with his brother at his side... The guardian of truth must fight the pull of the ancients to protect the half-blood princess and stand for the battle of the twins of the rose...

...with his race under the master’s control again and his role as its army’s leader completed, Truth will find his soul in the form of a dreama young and beautiful addition to the race...

It all started five years ago, when a half-blood vampire princess walked into a bar. Yep, Sophia Daletsky had walked into Curley’s and the lives of both Baikov brothers. With a smile that burned brighter than the sun, which they were supposedly meant to cower from, they should have known the second that smile landed on that they were in trouble.

Hair the color of night, skin of silky, golden sand, eyes the color of a stormy ocean, and lips the color of Eve’s forbidden apple. The stories warned of her beauty but not of her stubborn, save-the-world mentality. And here they were again, dumbfounded by the path she had now set one of the brothers on.

    Wait, Tavian; read it again.

Dante! How many times do you need me to read it to you?

Until it makes sense! Dante said with shock. "Father of the next generation?"

It’s never going to make sense; she can’t possibly think this is about me.

Oh, I think she does, and you need to talk to her and Sage about this.

Tavian glared at his brother; he was certain there was a little mirth to his tone.

Did you move from shock to humor, brother?

Dante grinned and tilted his head slightly. Avoiding the inappropriate tone he’d used and changing the subject, he said, Rachel and Liz are here. Try to let this go for tonight and have a little fun.

You know I love Sophia, but she is seriously turning my life into a freaking circus.

Don’t I know it. I dated her, remember?

Tavian let out a heavy breath; this situation had him breathing... like a human.

    Not normal.

At least you have Rachel now, Tavian pointed out.

Dante had loved Sophia fiercely, and yet, when that flame burned out, he finally saw what had been in front of him for years. He couldn’t imagine not having Rachel. She was everything he needed.

And Dante and Rachel had both hoped Liz would be what Tavian needed. He and Sarah had been broken up for over a year now, and still Tavian hadn’t really dated anyone. Liz was cute, bubbly, and had become a friend of Rachel’s as they pledged the same sorority.

With a smile to hide the uneasy feeling Tavian had about the prophecy Sophia had given him, he followed Dante to meet the girls and head out.

Sage? Sophia called out to him.

"Yeah, gattino?" Sage answered as he headed toward Sophia’s study.

Um, I got a text from Tavian. She smiled ruefully as he entered the room.

    Oh? What did he say?

She sucked in a breath and read the text to Sage.

I’m worried about your mental health, Sophia. If I understand this prophecy right and I understand what you and Sage think it means, you two have lost it. We need to talk.

Sage chuckled. He has gotten awfully comfortable with his queen; he called you crazy.

"Ah, don’t call me the queen. I thought princess was bad, but that’s even worse... and he called us both crazy."

I think we may be. So, what are you going to say to him?

"That we should definitely meet and talk about this. I mean, I get that it’s weird, but come on, he’s lucky."

Spoken like a true mother, Sage said as he took Sophia into his arms and placed a kiss on her forehead.

    Mom! Andre did it again.

Sophia sighed, and Sage held her a little tighter. It was so strange to have their four-year-old babies grow so fast; Andre and Ashlyn had matured to the lovely human age of pre-teen, falling somewhere around twelve years of age according to Madeline’s charts.

And they were constantly getting into trouble. Magic was used all around the house with minor consequences like things catching on fire, random rainstorms, gusts of air sweeping down the halls, embarrassing moments for friends and family as the twins learned to control the information they gleaned from people, and Andre trying to control his shifting. Like most abilities, whether Wiccan or vampiric, they were tied to emotions.

Ashlyn entered the study with a young panther walking at her side; Andre’s head hung low, and Sophia and Sage couldn’t help but smile at him.

    What happened? Sage asked Ashlyn.

He got frustrated; he’s not very good at math.

Andre sat and growled lightly, and Sophia raised a brow at him. Don’t growl at your sister; you need to try to control this, Andre. You can’t shift every time something you don’t like bothers you. Go run it off.

Andre stood up and walked to Sophia, pressing his head against her knees.

I know, she whispered just before he padded off.

Ashlyn grimaced. That was kind of my fault; sorry.

Sophia and Sage both shook their heads at her. Go finish your homework, Sage told her.

She smiled her brilliant little smile at her dad, and as usual, Sage melted.

Tavian had a good time hanging out with Liz. In fact, he was going to pick her up later this evening, but first he was waiting for Sophia to stop by. This whole prophecy thing was too weird.

Truth must protect her and their future together.

    Still bothered by the prophecy?

Tavian lifted his head from his glass of scotch to see Sophia standing in the entryway.

A little. You want something to drink?

Nah, I’m good; so let’s talk.

Fine. I mean no disrespect, but have you and your husband lost it?

Sophia laughed and sat next to him. No, but trust me, we read that prophecy over and over again, trying to make it mean something else.

And you couldn’t come up with another answer?

No, Tav, we couldn’t, and I’ve come to accept it. Actually, I feel pretty good about it.

How can you say that? Tavian asked, his eyes a little wide.

Because I know you, and I can’t think of anybody better.

I don’t know if I can be that man.

Sophia smiled and squeezed his free hand. Time will tell, but I have faith.

I’m glad one of us does.

You’re heading out, I can tell, so we can talk more later, if you want.

Tavian nodded and left to go pick up Liz.

Liz was dressed in a mid-thigh, black skirt and fitted, swoop-neck top. She looked amazing with her short, blonde hair and long legs. Blue eyes the color of tanzanite met his, and she smiled wide.

I’m glad you called, she said as she climbed into the passenger seat of his ’67 Shelby. Nice car.

Thanks, I like it. So, what would you like to do?

I don’t really care; let’s just drive somewhere.

Tavian smiled. He liked that idea.

    Chapter One

    ––––––––

    Two years later...

Vampire society was still a work in progress. Tavian knew this all too well. He’d spent the last two years in Europe with Samuel, chasing down what was left of Zillah’s followers and those who opposed the royal family. Vampires could be a finicky lot, and they hated to be told what to do.

The laws were harsh and the punishment swift. Cain’s ban on turning humans had become a big problem. Cain was trying to trust his race to follow his commands, but many simply didn’t listen; so Cain, in a massive show of power, actually pulled the capability from all vampires except the Royal family—and by extension, Sage and Ash. Tavian had been busy dealing with the vampires who hadn’t listened, but things were going to be better for him soon... he was headed home.

Tavian had, of course, kept tabs on Maldera Springs and all the loved ones he’d been missing; two years was a drop in the hat for a vampire, but there were people in his life for whom two years was a big deal. Dante had come over to Europe a few times while Tavian was gone, and Rachel and Liz even made a jaunt over to spend a week in Paris.

He’d heard all about Bryn and Ash’s little girl; how she was beautiful and had shifted for the first time a few months ago. He was looking forward to meeting the new little Wiccan shifter.

Rachel was nearing graduation and was still pushing to be turned, but Tavian wasn’t really sure how that would work; he couldn’t imagine Sophia being okay with Sage changing her—nor Dante feeling all that comfortable with it—and now that Ash was completely
