    A Witch's Mark - Magen McMinimy

    Prologue

    ––––––––

    It’s time, daughter.

Sarah, Bryn, and Rachel all looked from Sophia to Cain, who looked remarkable in his black tux. There was always something intimidating about him, but right now, he just looked like a proud father, ready to give his daughter away. Each girl took one more look in the mirror, smoothing out the deep fuchsia silk of her strapless dress and checking for any unruly strands of hair or smudged makeup. Once satisfied, they took the twins and got into position.

Good. Sophia smiled. I’ve waited far too long for this day, and I am more than ready.

Sophia took one last look in the mirror. Her curled locks were pulled off her neck and shoulders, just the way Sage liked, and only a few curls fell on the straps of her chiffon dress. She admired the way the jewelry Sage had bought her coordinated beautifully with the pearl and rhinestone detailing of the dress. It was a simple gown, but it flowed effortlessly to the ground in an A-line silhouette with a sweeping train. A deep V-cut in the corseted top framed the pendant of her necklace perfectly above her breasts.

Sophia’s eyes were locked on Sage as she walked down the aisle. She barely noticed the satin chair covers, the bouquets of purple orchids and orange callas that lined the aisle, or the pink rose petals that Ashlyn had tossed out for her. She did, of course, notice how beautiful her girls looked and how adorable Ashlyn and Andre were as the flower girl and ring bearer. Sage’s guys looked amazing of course; she’d expected nothing less. Their perfect skin was warmed by the setting sun on her father’s island. But mostly, she noticed Sage.

His dark hair danced slightly in the tropical breeze, and his deep, dark eyes were locked on her; he was the most gorgeous thing she’d ever laid eyes on. He looked good in a tux, and black was the most fitting color to accentuate his dark, handsome features.

The wedding had gone from a small event to a major gathering of at least two hundred, but all she cared about was Sage, and, of course, her friends, who—despite all the weirdness—had all come back together for this event.

Sophia held back from throwing herself into Sage’s arms as her father passed her to him, but oh, man, she wanted nothing more than for the ceremony to end so she could officially kiss her husband.

The crowd cheered as the final vows were read and Sage and Sophia shared their first kiss as a married couple.

Do I get a dance, Miss Bryn?

Bryn looked up from her spot at the head table. Ash was stunning as always, and as always, she noticed. The sun had fully set on the outdoor reception, and everything was bathed in candlelight and a silver glow provided by the moon and stars.

Bryn couldn’t help but smile as she looked at that beautiful, smug face. She’d missed seeing it every day, but in this past week, she’d been reminded of what a danger Ash was to her. Bryn knew better than to spend any extra time with him, even if that was all she wanted.

I don’t know, Ash; your date is headed this way.

Ash turned to where Bryn could only see his profile; he smiled as Blair approached, and Bryn used that moment to make her escape.

Ash turned back to catch Bryn’s tiny figure moving up the path away from the party. She’d been weird for a while now, and the distance between them was very obvious when they’d seen each other in Scotland. It had been the first time in six months that they’d been around each other, but she’d kept her distance. And this past week on the island, as they rehearsed and prepared for the wedding, she had avoided him, always keeping a good ten feet between them, and—if she could—at least two people. Ash was not one who lacked confidence, but Bryn was throwing him off. Shaking it off, he headed to the dance floor with Blair on his arm. Bryn would hopefully talk to him when she was ready. He was a vampire and had plenty of patience and all the time in the world.

Bryn had made it halfway up the path to the castle before she was seen making her cowardly exit.

Bryn! Child, wait. Adelaide’s smooth voice had Bryn grinding to a halt.

    Yes ma’am? Bryn smiled.

Don’t you go ma’amin’ me, child; where are you off to in such a hurry?

I just needed out of the crowd for a little.

Adelaide nodded. It wouldn’t have anything to do with Ash, would it?

    N—no, ma’am.

Adelaide raised a brow. All right, well then, I’ll let you be on your way. You hurry back, though; the bouquet toss is coming up soon.

Bryn nodded and hurried off again; the last thing she wanted was to partake in the bouquet toss. Really, she just wanted to hide until tomorrow when she could get off this island.

    Chapter One

    ––––––––

You weren’t supposed to hear that sound in Atlanta...but Bryn knew what that sound was; not that exact sound, but she knew a growl when she heard it. It figured; it was just her luck that late at night, all alone, something would be following her. The coven was already gone, so there was no one to come if she screamed. She’d stayed behind to do some more research on one of the many tomes Sophia and Sage had brought back from Italy. Why, oh, why did she have to love knowledge so much?

With a little pickup in her step, Bryn pulled her keys out and prayed she would be able to get in her car and out of here before whatever was rumbling behind her got any closer.

Ten feet... eight feet... almost there... five feet... Bryn threw her door open, dove in, and slammed the door shut, locking and starting the car as she did. With a deep breath, Bryn dared a look in the review mirror as she peeled out of the parking lot. Were those glowing eyes? Yes, glowing, yellow eyes. That meant one thing—werewolves—and a trip to Maldera Springs.

So this is your local hangout, huh?

Ash wasn’t sure what to think of Curley’s. It wasn’t his normal kind of place, but as long as the drinks were good, he was happy. Plus, the company wasn’t all bad tonight; Dante, Rachel, and Tavian were in rare form. Rachel had put away a few drinks and was in a very feisty mood. Tavian had finally come out of that brooding spell he’d been under; seeing Sarah had been good for him. And by the time Sophia and Sage’s wedding had come along, almost everyone had been comfortable and happy again.

They all had much fonder memories of Cain’s island now. Sophia had looked stunning, as expected. Sage was a lucky bastard, and he knew it—his eyes had never left Sophia. Rachel, Bryn, and Sarah had been beautiful bridesmaids; and he, Tavian, and Enoch had stood in as groomsmen. It really had been a good day for all involved.

Yep, sorry it’s not to your standards, Rachel uttered with a small head bob.

Are you even old enough to be drinking in a bar? Ash asked her, taking the pool cue from her; her hand-eye coordination was off.

She smiled. Not legally; I’ve got a year to go. But I’ve got a fake ID and a vampire boyfriend to get me out of trouble.

Dante chuckled, pulling her into his arms. A full-time job, I assure you.

So you don’t like our little bar? Rachel asked Ash.

No, it’s fine. It provides many wonderful things to look at.

Rachel, Dante, and Tavian all followed Ash’s gaze to a tall, scantily dressed blonde, who really should have been wearing a longer skirt if she were going to continue to lean over the billiard table.

Rachel scoffed, You’re a pig. She smiled at him, and Ash just shrugged. And that’s Jennifer Dawson; it’d be easy for you to get under that skirt. She was easy in high school, and I doubt that’s changed.

Rachel! Dante looked at her with exasperation. Those are the kind of comments that get you in trouble.

Yes, I know, Dante; she didn’t much like me calling her a slut to her face when I caught her hitting on my boyfriend back in high school, so I’m sure she wouldn’t like it now, either.

Tavian laughed and shook his head. I remember that. Sarah had to pull you off her while I kept her from attacking you both.

    Rachel grinned sheepishly.

So, I wonder what Blair would think of you checking out Jennifer, Rachel pointed out.

Blair would hardly think anything of it. We’re not in a relationship. Blair is too wild to be tied down.

Where is she now? Tavian asked as he took his shot, sinking the eight ball and beating Rachel again.
