Colton and Ry - Hollis Shiloh

    Colton and Ry

    by Hollis Shiloh

The boss looked at Colton with that levelheaded, sad yet expressionless face of his.  Why don't you take the rest of the night off, O'Leary? he asked in a gravelly voice.

Colton hated to see the pity in his eyes.  Sir, I'm fine.  Honestly.  He stood straight, trying to look competent, at ease, and unaffected.

The boss's level gaze pierced him through.  You sure?  You can't have your head on anything else when a call comes through.

    Colton nodded.  I'm sure.

All right.  Ruxton jerked his head toward the door, and Colton left the chief's office with relief.  If there was one thing he wanted, it was to keep working.  Surrounded by the other firefighters, he felt at home.  Whereas if he actually did have to sit home, just because he and Lane had broken up, well, he'd probably about want to slit his wrists by the end of a few hours sitting in front of the TV and drinking whiskey.

If there was one thing Colt needed, it was to keep working, no matter what.

He headed toward the kitchen with relief.  The smell of Farlan's five-alarm chili filled his nose with comforting familiarity, made his stomach rumble and his mouth water.  A few more hours and he'd have to go home, but not yet: not before chili.

Hey.  Rylan Tennhuss fell into step with him, bumping him with a shoulder.  You all right?  Rylan was a big guy, the kind of firefighter anyone would want to see coming through a window to rescue them.  Big, solid.  He needed a shave today, like he often did: the man sprouted hair constantly.

His big, brown eyes held concern right now.  For such a strong guy, he never did very good at keeping his emotions off his face.

Yeah.  Sure.  Fine.  Inwardly, Colton grimaced.  He shouldn't answer three times, not if he meant it.  Ry clearly wasn't fooled.

Come over tonight, said Rylan, and then picked up speed, walking away with quick, hard steps: a man on a mission, no doubt to get to the chili first.

Colt watched him expressionlessly.  In spite of himself, he felt his body responding just to the sight of Ry.  He could be fine for months around the man, barely noticing him.  But whenever he and Lane had trouble and broke up—and it looked permanent this time—he couldn't take his eyes off Ry.

The man was a walking sex object.  Not that he'd ever tell Ry that to his face.  Or to any other part of his anatomy.

And he had sampled other parts of the man's fine body.

They had this thing.  When neither was in a relationship, they... visited.  With sex.  And booze or the big game, and laughing together.  But mostly sex.  There was something easy and safe about going to bed with a man you trusted with your back during the day, trusted to save your life and get you back out of a burning building no matter what.

It felt safe because he could tell himself it was just about going to bed together.  Didn't have to admit anywhere or to anyone else that he was attracted to men sometimes.  It just... happened, and it was safe, because it was Rylan, and he'd never tell a soul.

Ry, said Colton, hurrying to catch up with him.  Wait up.  You're not gettin' all the red stuff.  He ran past him, bumping him on the way with his shoulder.  They exchanged a quick look, and he felt a grin growing on his face, the yes spoken in his eyes as they locked with Ry's brown ones.  He gave the tiniest nod, and watched Ry's face come alive from the inside with a shy, slow-blooming grin.  Man never could hide his moods; one of the things that made him so damn nice to be around.

He gave Colt a suitably masculine swat on the side.  At the big pot of bubbling chili, they shouldered each other out of the way, teasing and joking around.  Would be strange if they didn't.  Nobody paid any mind.  But when Colt had a bowl filled up with a big serving of chili and a bunch of crackers crumbled on top, he had to get away and find himself somewhere to sit away from Ry.  Being close enough to smell Ry's masculine, sweaty scent was getting to him just a little more today.

He sat on one of the long, broken-in couches, holding the chili over his lap, and focused on the game on the TV till he was more in control of himself.

    It would be good to
