Silent Voyages of the Last Winter

The Last Winter floated silently above the summit of Wegberg Peak, its warning pennants snapping in the wind. This high the air was thin. Cold. Crisp in ways that made Cyrille shiver inside the heavy cloak Akuchi had draped over his shoulders before he stepped through the Gate. Every sound was both too loud and too faint at the same time, attenuated by the elevation that the Last Winter frequented.

    Always.

The damned place couldn't possibly be allowed any lower down where life existed. As much as Cyrille hated the library's haunts, he understood all too well that it couldn't be allowed where people lived.

    Or gods.

    Animals.

    Plants.

Even lichen was a risk but the chance of lichens being taken over and used by the cursed volumes filling the Last Winter's miles of shelves was low enough to be acceptable. At this time of year. Come summer the Last Winter would sail higher and higher into the sky where only the strongest birds and sturdiest insects could survive. On certain days of the year, planetary conjunctions and the Day of Death, it sailed higher still, until there was no air at all and the occupants had to use spells not to die of asphyxiation and cold.

    Always such a lonely place.

It had its own sort of beauty. Austere, built of steel-grey marble and slate gone blue with the effect of sun, wind and rain, the Last Winter was the proverbial castle built on clouds. Granted, it was actually built on spelled boulders the size of buildings bound together by ancient blood magic, but the water that slowly spilled off its sides magically transformed back to clouds that rose and rained back down to provide the Last Winter with the water its few occupants needed.

Such few occupants for such a large place.

There were never more than five people in the Last Winter, all scholars, mages, priests or priestesses of incredible power. Usually far fewer for there weren't many who could deal with the place. Force of will. For who could resist evil that whispered into your ear day and night? No, the Last Winter needed to sail high enough that no one could be lured into it. No one could be corrupted until they let the damned books free.

    Especially now.

    Cyrille hated being alone.

Being alone here was worse than anything other than being trapped in his own body by Dorji Kita, waiting to be consumed. At least Dorji Kita had died. The
