The sky was overcast and the wind was picking up from a slight breeze that was refreshing to strong enough to stir the trash that was scattered in the parking lot of Brooks Crossing Shopping Mall. The clouds in the southwest looked darkest, threatening rain, when the Taylor family scurried from their vehicle toward the entrance with their three children. Mary Taylor held their youngest, Lacy who was three years old, in one arm while she pulled her hair away from obstructing her vision with the other, while Hugh held onto Nelson and Melissa’s hands as they crossed through the narrow demarked pedestrian zone.

Today was their family day. Things had been fairly hectic the past several weeks with the children changing schools and the family settling into their new home. Hugh had cleared his schedule for the day and decided that they would take the kids to the mall for an outing. Since the weather was threatening a storm, it appeared they had made a good choice; their options would have been severely limited under impending thunderstorms.

Nelson ran on ahead and held the door open for his mom and two sisters and Hugh waited for them all to go through. Nonetheless, from what he read it didn’t look like he was prohibited from carrying.

If he would have taken the time to read just a little further, he would have seen that he, and all carriers, licensed or not, were prohibited. This mall was a ‘gun-free zone’. Hugh had not had the opportunity to brush up on state and local laws since coming into the area and so continued as he always had back at his home state.

They made their way through the crowded and noisy food court area, awash in the various scents of the different cuisines offered. None of it appealed to him as they had just eaten at Taco Bell and he was stuffed.

Mary put Lacy down and guided her along the outskirts of the eating area making their way further into the mall’s interior so they could get to their destination. They stopped just beyond and rented a pushcart with the plastic car on the front, where Lacy promptly sat and begin to ‘drive’.

The place was packed, even for a Friday and it looked like nearly every
