Chapter One: Flies and Spiders
My name is Donkey and this is my tale. When I say tale, I mean my story, not my tail, that little thing that hangs on the back of me. Actually, I really don't like my tail. It's too short! Some donkeys have rather long tails, but mine is just too short. I wish I had a tail like a horse, a really long one, so that when flies sit on my rump I can flick them off.
There are so many flies flying around. Buzz, buzz, buzz, all day long. When they sit on my ears, I just give a little twitch and they leave, when they land on my legs, I can stomp my foot and they fly away, but when they sit on my rump, I flick my tail and they just sit there laughing at me. Well, they wouldn't laugh if I had a big long black tail. I would flick them off like those big black horses do, and they wouldn't be able to sit there and bite me.
Yes, that's right, sometimes flies bite me; not those little flies, but the big black ones. They call them horseflies, but they like biting donkeys. They land on horses and flick, whack, they are shot through the sky before they can bite, but oh no, they choose to sit on my rump, and my useless little tail can't reach them. Maybe they should be called donkey flies. Anyway, I wish I had a longer tail.
Now, back to my tale, I mean my story. Where was I? Oh yes, I remember. My tale happened a long time ago, about two thousand years. Actually, in some parts of the world I am quite famous. Sometimes people put pictures of me on Christmas cards. And by the way, my real name is not Donkey; that's just the name my owner calls me. I have another name which you could never say correctly because it's a donkey name and you, children, always think that donkeys just make donkey noises, like hee-haw. Well it may sound like hee-haw or eeyore to you, but it's donkey language for me.
So God gave me a donkey name, and my owner just calls me Donkey. You do believe in God, don't you? Of course, you do. All children believe in God, but some of them stop believing when they get old, when someone else puts silly ideas in their heads.
Now, where was I? Ummm...ah yes…My owner's name is Joseph. I like Joseph. He's a very kind man and looks after me well. He's very patient with me, even when I am tired and don't want to work. Ahhh...there's another fly. Buzz, buzz, buzz, all they ever do is buzz, buzz, buzz. Now, if I just had a longer tail. Sorry, I really must stop complaining about my tail. I should be happy with whatever God gave me, and I am usually, but in the summer there are just a lot of flies around here, and my tail is too short. Sorry, I already said that, didn't I?
Anyway, I was telling you about Joseph. Joseph is a carpenter. He makes things for people; things like windows, doors, tables and stools, and he fixes their houses. Usually in the morning he comes out to my stable - that's the place where I eat and sleep - gives me a pat on the neck, rubs my ears, smiles at me, and puts a small saddle on my back. It's not heavy, and he always makes sure it's comfortable. Then he gets his tools, ties them onto the saddle, and we go to someone's house to fix their window or door or roof, or whatever needs fixing.
My stable is behind Joseph's house next to his workshop where he makes new things out of wood. On other days, he puts a little harness on me and I pull a small cart to the place where we get new wood. It's not hard work, not really, and Joseph always gives me plenty to eat, and at the end of the day he brushes my coat. You know what a coat is, right? No, I don't wear a coat like you; I don't have arms. I am covered in hair, kind of gray hair, and my hair is called a coat, so I wear my coat all the time, and you wear yours when it rains.
I like spiders. Yes, I know that some people don't like spiders because they have lots of hairy legs and look creepy, but I like them. They just sit in their webs and mind their own business, and of course they love having flies for dinner. Buzz, buzz, buzz, right into a spider's web. Mr. Spider wakes up and there is one less pesky fly buzzing around my stable. I also like straw. Joseph always puts fresh straw in my stable, and it's very comfortable. My favorite foods are apples and carrots, but usually I eat hay, which is also very tasty.
I live in a small village on top of a hill. I would like to live near the sea, but I live on top of a hill and it's a steep hill to climb, especially when I am pulling the cart. My village is called Nazareth, and Nazareth is in the land of Palestine. There are lots of other animals living here in Nazareth as well as donkeys. We have sheep, cows, chickens and a few dogs, but almost no horses. I often see horses and, to be honest, I feel a bit sorry for them. You see, there are a lot of soldiers who live in Palestine, and I don't like these soldiers. They charge up the hill on their horses and scare everyone. Sometimes they do really bad
