About this ebook

The idea that ‘Prayer is a key’ to revival does not tell us how to pray or the important basic things that we must grasp in order to live a transforming and influential prayer life. On the other hand, the keys of prayer lead us to the practical things that help us to pray, and what we must do to teach or to learn about prayer. This is a teaching on the keys of prayer with living examples of how prayer is a key. This method makes teaching or learning about prayer more powerful and practical.

‘Prayer is a Key’ gives enthusiasm and encouragement but it does not give a foundation on which to build a life of prayer, and enthusiasm that does not find a foundation does not last long. In order to continue, it needs enthusiasm to be continually aroused, but the foundation, which is learning about the keys of prayer, even if enthusiasm is not aroused, produces the fruit of enthusiasm and encouragement.

    Introduction

The eleven chapters of this book are part of the teaching that I present in the Schools of Prayer. This book is intended for those who live the life of prayer and have already learned about prayer, and for leaders of prayer ministries and houses of prayer.

What spurred me to write down a part of the teaching that I give was a request from a group of prayer leaders from different countries for me to do so. What made this request special was that a number of those engaged full-time in prayer ministry told me that most of what I was presenting was new to them.

Each chapter is presented very concisely without seeking to examine many other important aspects, because the goal is to present a clearer and more comprehensive vision. If God blesses me with the opportunity to write about the same subject again, I may write in greater detail and include other topics.

I pray that this teaching may inspire a new determination in every man and woman of prayer, point him or her to important keys, and show him how to use them.

    Chapter 1

    Keys to Prayer

Everybody who wants to learn in more depth about powerful and effective prayer must first of all set out on the correct path. I say this because the popular way of teaching and learning about prayer is an important way but does not lead us into deep, wide and practical dimensions.

The popular way of learning about prayer is called Prayer is the Key to Revival. This method teaches us about the power of prayer and the affects that it can exert on our lives and the lives of those around us, and on our lands. Books have been written about this approach. Prayerful men of God have written about their lived experiences. For instance, there are those who say that they have prayed an incredible number of prayers, and all these prayers have been answered.

In the Bible, we can also share that Jabez prayed and God gave him what he asked. Elijah prayed and shut up the rain, then he prayed again and the rain came. He prayed at a different time and fire came down from heaven onto the altar during his confrontation with the prophets of Baal.

All these things are wonderful. They tell us that prayer is a key, that it opens doors, but they do not tell us what are the keys of prayer that open. For this reason, I distinguish between ‘prayer as a key’ and ‘the keys of prayer’.

The phrase ‘Prayer is a key’ does not tell us how to pray or the important basic things that we must grasp in order to live a transforming and influential prayer life.

There are a number of keys to prayer. Here is just a simple example to clarify what is meant by keys. When Elijah prayed for the rain to come, he prayed on the basis of a divine revelation that God wanted to bring rain, because when Elijah heard the sound of rain, there was no sound in the physical realm but in the spiritual realm. The proof of this is that in the physical realm there was no sign of the existence of the sound of rain until after Elijah had prayed and a cloud the sign of a man’s hand appeared. What happened here was that Elijah prayed on the basis of a divine revelation. This key is called ‘prayer by revelation’. We see, hear and understand what is on the heart of God for us to pray and we pray it. The fastest way to see answers to prayer is to pray by revelation, because when we pray by revelation, the reply comes more quickly because we are
