    Dreamlight Aftermath

    Paris, France

Hours after Rebecca Adamson’s encounter with Dreamlight …

Montana Knight stepped across landmasses, over wide lakes and the mighty towers that rose up to touch the sunlit sky. No prison could contain him. No threat could sway him from his duties, least of all the thugs he’d recently walked into a prison cell. Wherever shadows lurked in the dark patches of a stone wall, an artful tapestry or even a rock, he could shadow step at his calling.

The one thing he could not outrun was time itself, an aspect that weighed heavily on him in recent years. Montana had known for some time that he should retire soon, hang up the cloak for a younger generation. His instincts, on the other hand, told him few men stood prepared to face the threats emerging this new age.

It might be the theatrics boiling in his blood, but Madame Fortune’s call seemed suspicious. Chills rose on Montana’s back as the frigid air of a nearing winter scolded across his face. He stood, resolute, in the heart of Fortune’s kingdom, a dutiful knight. Truth be told, he served Queen and country first and foremost, but Fortune was a good friend, a woman he was proud to call an ally. Montana gazed up at Fortune Tower, a metal monolith to her majesty. He raised his fingers to his head and tapped his earpiece.

Squire, might you recant the situation?

Dae replied, lethargically. There’s not much to say, sir. A rogue resonance user attacked Mrs. Adamson.

That’s no modest gesture, Montana said. Is she safe?

For the time being, I see that no harm has come to her beyond her initial encounter.

And you know this, how? Montana asked. Don’t tell me you piped into her security feeds.

Bandwidth let me through. I’m working with him right now to sort out the attacker’s identity, but it’s going to take some time.

Montana stroked his moustache. Such as it is, we won’t have much of it.

He grimaced, dusted off his black leather coat and stepped into a nearby shadow cast from a brick building to his right. Paris knew many coves and crevices. It was by far one of his most favorite cities to frequent. As luck would have it, he didn’t have to travel far when Fortune beckoned, a silver lining to an otherwise grim set of circumstances.

Montana shifted through the shadow and traveled miles in a single step, revealing his second foot in the heart of Lady Adamson’s highrise penthouse. Montana regarded it an awkward meeting place, but Dae recanted only what she’d been told. Squinting through the sunlit windows on the far end, Montana began to see the meaning in her choice of meeting place. A golden sun cast rays of color on the city below, basking the penthouse suite in lines of light and shadow that illuminated the marks on her couch.

He walked around to inspect it, noticing the trails of smoke still steaming from the torn leather, but that must have been hours ago at the soonest. The penthouse elevator behind the couch clanged, and the doors slid open. Montana drew back but relaxed at the sight of Madame Fortune and several others. He recognized Zhao ho Peng and knew of Katherine Sakamoto. The other two seemed important, though he couldn’t place their names.

    You’re early, Montana, Fortune said.

He took a bow as the rest of them gathered around. Montana said nothing and moved aside as Fortune strode out between them and the windows. An early afternoon sun backlit her figure in an almost eerie manner, and Montana caught sight of a gauze patch covering her cheek.

I’m grateful for all of you coming on such short notice, Fortune said, folding her arms. I feel terrible for asking this of anyone, but I don’t have many options and so far, you’re the only people who picked up the phone.

Montana eyed the lanky man with slouched posture beside Sakamoto as he spoke. I’m like, only here because Sakamoto dragged me … his sentence stopped short with a swift elbow to the rib cage from Sakamoto. I mean, totally happy to help, ma’am.

On second glance, he did recognize the boy. That young man was Kingdom, Mr. Lloyd, the epitome of a lazy slacker. How he managed his way into Magnum’s inner circle likely spoke volumes about the nature of his resonance. Montana eyed him with a taste of scorn, if for nothing else than to warn against another blunder.

Lloyd shrugged it off, hardly paying attention. The other, who’d kept quiet, was Simon of the Old Order. His last weeks as Magnum’s personal chaperone had aged him somewhat. Simon stood taller, with more flair to his posture.

This isn’t like you, Rebecca, Sakamoto said. I care about you, but not enough to fly down and mend your upholstery.

I concur, Simon added. Whoever this Dreamlight fellow is, he’s spooked you well.

It’s more than that, Fortune replied. She turned away, shirking back. Montana examined the patch on her face from where he stood.
