I'm a native Arizonan and while growing up, I would often write down notes about stories germinating in my head. I was always interested in the fantasy genre, having been introduced to Anne McCaffrey's Riders of Pern book series (may she rest in peace) in elementary school. I devoured Piers Anthony, Raymond E. Feist, and later, Lord of the Rings. In trying my hand at mysteries, I've found they are fickle things, like a knot in yarn. Instead of cutting it, try to work it out and once unraveled, have a straight line of yarn again. I will some more books coming soon, so please enjoy the ones I have out now. Prologue

Matt stared at Lucifer. The shocking proposal Lucifer had outlined seemed to go against everything he believed.

You want me to stand with you when you take over heaven? Are you insane?!

Lucifer, the Morning Star, smiled a cold smile, his brown eyes dark amber. "Those humans He created are nothing to us. And he expects us to bow before them? They should be bowing before us. We were created first. We should be the ones to either fan the flame of life or extinguish it. If you stand with me, brother, I will make sure you have a place at my right hand."

To how many angels have you said that line?

    Just you, brother.

Matt opened his mouth to say something when he spotted Leziel walking towards them. Lucifer, Matthew. Good I caught you.

What is it, brother? Matt asked, seeing Leziel’s forehead crease.

There’s word in the ranks. A child will be born in the future, part angel, part human, and part demon.

That’s impossible! Matt gasped. All Nephilim children have been evil. Are you saying this child will be evil as well? An innocent soul that’s not upon birth?

We must stop it from happening. Lucifer’s voice was firm. Nephilim children are an abomination and must be destroyed. Leziel, are you with us?

Leziel swallowed and sighed. I am, Lucifer. I am.

    Chapter 1

Meredith Rogers watched the scarlet liquid drip form her forearm. The dull knife she held in her right hand was splattered with it, the liquid pooling at the edge and dripping, steadily…

    Drip…drip…drip….

The man watching her sighed. Meredith, this has to stop.

No. Meredith whispered, using the knife to make another cut, fresh dark red blood pouring out into the sink.

The man sighed again. At least let me call someone. Let me help you.

Meredith turned around, her blue eyes meeting the man’s brown ones, seeing the pain and deep disappointment in his eyes. He was close to giving up on her.

    Just a little bit longer.

Who are you going to call, John? It’s done. It’s over.

John closed his eyes and bowed his head, shoulders slumping. Fine. When his eyes met hers, they were guarded, almost cold. I won’t watch you waste away. You want to kill yourself, go ahead.

Meredith watched the tall man turn around and walk away. John had given up on her. Meredith felt a brief moment of relief, yet the feeling that replaced it was a pain in her chest. John was gone to her, and probably never coming back.

She turned back to the sink and cut more deeply in her forearm, until the dizziness made her drop the knife. Meredith saw the floor coming up to meet her, the linoleum tile a sheet of scarlet.

Meredith woke up and sat up, gasping. Her black hair was matted and hanging in strings. Where was I? I could’ve sworn…

Seeing her blood made her stomach churn. Her feet slipped on the scarlet soaked floor as she leaned over the trashcan, vomiting. When her stomach was empty, she slid to the floor, blinking back tears. Her arm felt numb and when she lifted it, she realized that she had trouble bending her fingers.

Did I cut a tendon? An artery? Surely it was a vein, wasn’t it? Where’s John? This last thought propelled her to the phone, her arm dry and sticky with her blood. How long was I out?

With her right hand she dialed the phone. It rang four times before it was picked up. Meredith felt a jolt in her chest when she heard his voice.

    Hello?

    John! John, it’s me, Meredith.

There was a second of silence on the other end.

John, did your hear me? I’m here! I’m alive! Meredith almost shouted in the phone.

Meredith, is it really you? John had a note of incredulity in his voice. Do you know how long it’s been?

    No.

I left at ten this morning. Look at the clock now. How is it you’re still alive?

Meredith glanced at the clock and nearly dropped the phone. I’ve been out for twelve hours. Was I dead?

I don’t know. John’s voice cut through her reverie. Meredith realized she spoke out loud.

    Oh sorry. Um, John-

    Need help cleaning up?

Meredith winced at the frostiness in his words. No, I can handle it. Thanks anyway. She signed off and headed to the shower. After she dressed, she searched the house for the first-aid kit.

Damn it! First-aid kit is in John’s house. Meredith wrapped her arm in a towel and got out the cleaning supplies. Once the scarlet surface had only traces of scarlet on it, Meredith sat down on the couch to rest and closed her eyes.

"Meredith, why did you cut yourself?

"It’s a long story. It’s complicated. Why do you care?"

"Oh, Meredith. You know how much I care."

"No, I don’t. Besides, I don’t need anyone right now."

"Not even John? You two have a future together."

Meredith was getting testy at this point. We have nothing! She shouted. He left! He doesn’t want anything to do with me! I told him, it’s over. It’s done.

The man in front of her crossed his arms, his white wings spreading. It’s not over. He will return to you.

"I’ll believe when I see it. And don’t get me started on fate, destiny, any of that. I don’t believe it. At all. And by the way, I don’t care what you do to me. I don’t believe in religion."

"You don’t believe in my kind?"

    "Why should I?"

    The angel shrugged. Your choice.

"Fine. She gestured to her arm. This is my choice. You can’t make me do otherwise."

The angel grinned. I can’t. Only my boss can.

Meredith nearly bolted off the couch when she heard a loud crash. She fell to her knees on the floor, gasping.

    Meredith?

John? John! Tears coursed down her face at the sight of him coming into her living room, brown eyes concerned. He knelt down next to her.

    No first-aid kit?

I couldn’t find it. Meredith suddenly felt like an idiot for not
