To my loving parents who support me in everything I do and introduced me to my Father in Heaven.

    Chapter 1

Rose looks at the palm trees outside the window of the Orange County medical building. The wind is strong today, she thinks. The ‘Santa Ana winds’ are blowing. She wrinkles her nose against the low humidity and sinks deeper into the soft overstuffed chair.

Rose. Her eyes return to the kind face of Mary, the counselor. Take a deep breath and let’s start again. She looks at her notepad. Rose is sure she doesn’t need to, as Mary asks the same questions every time they meet. Where are you today?

Rose sighs, agitated. It’s hard to dive in. I don’t want to believe I’m this messed up. Mary starts to speak and she holds up her hand. I’m feeling frustrated as I lost my job.

Mary clears her throat and Rose nods. Yeah, okay. I gave Angelito the power to lose my job for me. Rose pulls her hand into her lap and relaxes her fingers. She straightens her shoulders. I let Angelito tell me what to do, what to believe, and who to listen to. I gave him my power.

She looks at her hands and relaxes them again. I’m angry with Angelito and I’m angry with myself. She wipes away the tears before they can fall from her eyes. She refuses to cry again.

Thank you for sharing, Rose. Now, what is in the past? Rose hates how Mary is calm and quiet when all she wants to do is scream!

My relationship with Angelito is in the past. My disagreements with my Planted group is in the past. My separation from my father will be in the past. Rose pounds her fist on the arm of the chair. I wasted time! I went backward. I was happy and looking forward to the Planted group. I was looking forward to growing close to Lily and Daisy, and meeting new people. Fresh tears fall down her cheeks and she brushes them away.

Mary leans forward. Yes. The time is gone. The way you experienced Planted is set. It’s okay to cry or be angry about losing that time. You’re grieving for what might have been and it’s perfectly normal. Mary moves back in her chair and glances at her pad. Why is Lily so important to you?

I’ve watched her with her kids. She loves them. They’re important to her. I like to think my mother would have been like that. Rose feels resentful about the question.

Has Lily removed herself from you? Is she no longer your friend?

Rose glares at Mary. She hasn’t. She’s still my friend. And I now have five new friends. But I still wanted that time with her. Mary nods.

What is the present? Mary makes notes on her pad. Rose hates it when she does that.

Today, I have five female friends who’ve seen me at my worst and still love me. I want to spend time with my dad now. I’ve missed him. I still want to know more about my mom too, though. Rose watches Mary nod. She is saying all the correct things. It has taken thirty days for her to even know what the right things are.

Mary, why did I fall for Angelito? Why did he come after me? Am I broken? Rose doesn’t wipe the tears off of her chin.

Mary continues to write on her pad without answering. Finally, she looks up.

You know why, Rose. We don’t know why he came after you, but we do know why you fell for him. Rose shakes her head.

He flattered me. He was exciting. Fun. He made me feel special and unique. God made me unique and special, so why did I need validation and approval from Angelito? Rose runs her hand down the chair and stands up. She paces in the small office between the chair and the window.

Why didn’t I pay attention to the little things? I felt something was off. He made me feel confused. I questioned my faith, my father, my friends, and my church, all because of him. It’s like he brainwashed me without me even noticing. She looks at Mary as she sits down in her chair. Why didn’t I notice sooner?

Mary watches her confused facial expressions and Rose stares down at her hands. I’ve never had a woman to talk to about boys or boundaries, with my mom not being around. She shrugs her shoulders and looks out of the window. I only had my dad. We talked about school and work. We talked about so many things, never about Mom or boundaries. We didn’t talk about having confidence in myself, or standing up for myself.

Mary sits there quietly, waiting. Rose glances at her. I understood who he was when I was in a Planted meeting. I saw how I’d changed and it wasn’t good for anyone. And the group prayed for me. Even Camellia prayed for me after I behaved awfully towards her. Rose pauses. I asked her why once. She said because true friends are hard to find. Rose sniffs as more tears fall from her eyes. She said she needs me.

Mary checks her watch and hands Rose a tissue. What are your plans for the future?

Rose wipes her face and crumples the tissue in her fist. I’m applying for jobs. I’m praying every day and coming here to see you. I’m going to my Planted group. I’m spending time with my dad. She takes a deep breath. I’m going to ask him about my mom, my real mom who had faults and made mistakes. Not the woman he talks about who was always happy, always giving, and full of strength. Rose glares at Mary daring her to contradict her.

Mary smiles. That’s great, Rose. It’ll be a good conversation. She rises from her chair. Our time is up for today but I hope you continue to pray for the strength to forgive yourself. Give yourself a break, Rose.

Rose nods and walks out the door. She leans against the wall in the hall and takes a deep breath. I failed. How can I ever forgive myself?
