To the women who are battered physically or emotionally and survive stronger than they thought possible. God can do more than you can ask or think. Ephesians 3:20

    Chapter 1

Heavy silverware clinks against crystal and chinaware as waiters step between tables. The murmur of polite conversation surrounds them. Jasmine isn’t sure why she is here with Peter. He has been a good friend for the last six months, after her husband, Joseph, left her for a younger woman. Peter has been a safe confidant for her when her son broke his leg. He is a nice man.

Her phone dings in her lap. She meant to put it away but didn’t bother once the dinner arrived. Dessert is coming soon. Peter ordered her German chocolate cake. It is her favorite but she rarely has it because she has to watch her weight.

She shakes her head. No, I don’t have to watch my weight. Joseph was clear he was done with her when he filed for divorce. She doesn’t have to live by his rules anymore.

Excuse me, Jasmine. Peter rises from his chair. I need to speak with the waiter. He walks toward the front of the restaurant and Jasmine smiles at him. He is acting jittery, like he is nervous.

Jasmine wonders what God has in mind for her in the years ahead. Her job with the church outreach has been more fulfilling than any job she could have dreamed of. Joseph has seemed different over the last few weeks. He keeps showing up at the oddest moments, but Peter is nice. She wishes she could get excited about spending time with him.

Loud voices near the front of the restaurant interrupt her thoughts but she can’t understand the words. She hopes Peter isn’t anywhere near them.

Her new friend, Melissa, has been praying with her for the men in their lives. Her most satisfying change in her life are her new friendships with women, especially Melissa and her Planted group. If only her daughter would answer her calls and texts. Jasmine sighs. Her phone dings again as Peter walks back to the table. He has a big smile on his face, but it is too big, almost fake.

Jasmine grabs her phone in her lap and pulls it out from under her napkin. She clicks it a few times and looks down. She has three messages from Joseph. She opens the messages app.

The loud voices turn to shouting and Peter clears his throat. Jasmine feels his gaze on her but she wants to read the texts from Joseph in case her son needs her. Finally it opens and she stares at the words. They are short. I love you. I’m sorry. Will you marry me again? Jasmine stares at the phone in shock. Wonder fills her heart as she realizes God is answering her prayers.

She hears her name and at first she thinks it is Peter. She glances at him and sees him holding a ring box in his hand. It is open with a beautiful ring sparkling in the light. He is reaching out to her but his face is turned toward the entrance.

She hears her name shouted again. Jasmine! A man bursts through the entrance waving a large knife. Let go of me. I know she’s in here. Waiters approach slowly from all sides, and a few cooks come from behind. The hostess has her hand to her mouth and she is shrinking away.

This can’t be happening. It’s her new friend, Melissa’s, husband, Alfonso. Jasmine feels the phone in her hand, glances at Peter, and then stares at Alfonso. How did she get here?

    Chapter 2

    Nearly four weeks earlier…

Jasmine feels her heart pounding. She is excited to be driving with Camellia and Daisy to the battered women’s home. Even though Camellia originally wanted to do something for the homeless, she seems happy to be here today. Daisy is describing the flowers she planted in her yard. She hopes to find a way to irrigate it without using too much water.

Jasmine looks out of the window as they turn the corner. She did research on the battered women’s home and the women are lucky to be there. More homes like this one are needed, as well as counseling for the men, women, and children involved. Women don’t feel safe enough to step away from their men and some die horrible deaths.

That isn’t the worst outcome, though. Children have attacked their own fathers trying to protect their mothers. No child should have these experiences. While Jasmine can’t imagine how a woman can stay with a man who has abused them physically, she does understand how easy it is to stay with a man who tears apart a woman’s heart with their words and actions. If her husband hadn’t left her for another woman, Jasmine would still be in that position.

I think the place is down the next street. Camellia is checking her phone for directions.

Jasmine tries to clear her mind. Trying to find a job and helping her son has made her too busy. She applied for a job at the church outreach office. That possibility of employment and her son are the only bright spots in her future. Hopefully she will get the job and her son will heal quickly. She has been embarrassed to tell her new friends in the Planted group how he broke his leg. Trying to get her attention, her son took hallucinogenic drugs and jumped off the roof. He has her attention focused on him now.

We’re here! Daisy slows the car down looking for a place to park. Jasmine fingers the bags of food they brought today. She knows the bags of clothes in the back will help these women who left everything for safety’s sake. Ah, here we go. Daisy pulls into a spot a
