Chapter 1
The slight breeze barely stirs the air and the sun beats down on the church parking lot, where a meal is being served for the local homeless people. The leaves in the trees at the park next door rustle with impatience, or so it seems to Marshall, the pastor of the small church. He is worried about the people who are present in the park today. He watches a loud group edge near to the table of food. Several people who he recognizes step out of their way. Clearly they are causing trouble for those around them.
Bob, his volunteer, leans closer. Marshall, I think that group is the one we’ve heard about. Mean heroine users who abuse those in the homeless community. Should we call the police?
Marshall looks at the spread of food on the table and at the people surrounding him. No, they haven’t done anything wrong yet. They’re only being rude.
Marshall lifts another box of sandwiches from under the table and adds the sandwiches to the tray for people to take.
One man walks to the table. I’ll take the box!
He tries to pull it out of Marshall’s hands.
I don’t believe you will. You’ll each take one sandwich, and once you finish that, you can have another one. That way everyone gets a chance.
Marshall pulls the box away and continues setting out sandwiches.
The guy turns to look at another man. Marshall assumes he is the leader when he shakes his head no. The guy picks up a sandwich and walks away. The others return to the table to gather sandwiches, chips, and a drink.
In the park, Marshall notes a truck arriving and he sees men unloading equipment. It appears to be a busy day. The men talk and joke to themselves. A few women in the group move large boxes over to a curtained area the men set up. A man pulls a cart of odd looking clothing into the curtained area. They are setting up some sort of stage similar to a homeless cardboard house. A fancy SUV drives to the curb and a man steps out with a bulky camera bag.
The loud group of homeless people edges closer into the park to check out the setup. They are frowning and pushing each other. The men working with the equipment notice the homeless people and start laughing.
Marshall looks at Bob and nods. The man pulls out his cell phone and dials 911. He turns away from the table and talks quietly but Marshall sees the comprehension on the faces of his regulars. They gather around the table picking up sandwiches and refilling their cups. If they’re able to, they walk away from the park to the next homeless safe
spot down the street. Marshall tries to offer a word or two but no one is listening. They know the police will arrive soon and they want to disappear.
One girl stands by the table watching everyone else. Marshall tries to help Madison every week but she usually disappears before he can introduce her to anyone. He can tell she has real issues. The scars on her face are pronounced but her fragile beauty is still evident underneath.
Madison, do you want to take some sandwiches to go?
He tries to stay quiet but his deep voice attracts one of the people in the loud crowd. Madison ducks under the table. Marshall watches the man walk back to the table and take several sandwiches. He walks swiftly to his group in the park.
Marshall sighs. Bob returns and puts away his phone. They said ten to fifteen minutes, at least. There’s some accident on the other side of town and the traffic light is out. They don’t have anyone to send here for a while.
He shakes his head and watches the park anxiously. Marshall follows his gaze and prays for the police to hurry.
A limousine arrives at the park and takes up all the remaining parking spots. Several of the men and the two women hurry to the limousine and open the door. Out steps the most beautiful woman Marshall has ever seen. She looks around her as she straightens and her eyes connect with Marshall’s for a brief moment. He feels a kick to his stomach, and the ache is sudden and intense. This woman needs his help and he wants to help her now.
He hears Bob gasp beside him. She’s beautiful. I’ve never seen someone so perfect.
He takes a step forward as if he is in a trance. Marshall puts his hand on his shoulder to steady him.
She is beautiful. I think she’s a model, but she’s still a child of God.
The man looks at Marshall in surprise.
Right.
He points at the park. What’s happening?
Marshall watches the homeless group crowd closer to the equipment and the men standing between. They fold their arms and Marshall sees their mouths move. The homeless people begin shouting and Marshall shakes his head. This is going to be bad. Lord, protect her any harm.
The model appears in front of the curtained area wearing a crazy outfit. It looks like a cross between a ballroom gown and rags. She looks beautiful but something is wrong and she is frowning. The homeless people fall silent.
The photographer finishes putting his camera together and snaps some pictures while shouting orders. He takes pictures of the park and the church and he captures Marshall standing behind the table with his volunteer. He turns his camera to the homeless people and Marshall can hear the clicking of the camera. The homeless push forward toward the lovely model.
The model sits down where the photographer orders her to sit. She places herself and fixes her clothes. He takes pictures of her from various heights and directions, giving her orders. Marshall can’t hear the words, but he can see her
