Author

Donald H Sullivan

I'm a native Floridian, retired from the US Army, I started writing in the army, mostly training and tech manuals. Boring stuff, but it whetted my interest in writing. I've written sci-fi, thrillers, mysteries, humor, fantasies, horror, and more. I'm now living in NC. While in the army, I served in air defense artillery, military intelligence, and psychological operations. I also worked in Federal Civil Service as a quality assurance specialist, ammunition surveillance. I love writing, reading, most kinds of music, and animals--especially dogs.

    Foreword

There are several types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. To put it simply, dementia is a condition that affects the brain. It can result in mood issues; personality changes, confusion, speech problems, difficulty in reading or writing, and memory problems. It may also include difficulty in reasoning, antisocial behavior, difficulty performing even simple tasks, and psychological problems such as mood swings and agitation.

Here is an outline of the case of a dementia patient and the caregiver, her husband.

    Dedication

To the doctors, nurses, and all the staff on the fourth floor south at Womack Army Medical Center at Ft Bragg, NC, who cared for my wife while she was hospitalized there.

To the entire staff of Fayetteville Manor, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care, in Fayetteville, NC.

To all Setsuko’s Japanese friends and church members, who have helped both her and me.

To the caring nurses assigned as my case workers.

To my next door neighbors, the Blevins, who were a tremendous help.

To my sisters, Marguerite and Joyce, who kept my spirits up and boosted my morale.

And finally, to my wife, Setsuko, with whom I enjoyed sixty-five years of happiness.

    The Beginning

Setsuko (with the u silent, pronounced Set-sko) Kawashima was born in Tokyo Japan on January 3, 1932. When she was born, Japan was already at war in Asia, having invaded Manchuria. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor she was nine years old. She didn’t remember much about the war years, but she recalled the scarcity of food, the horror of the incendiary bombing of Tokyo, and her family losing their home to fire during the raid. She remembers fleeing from their burning home and seeing burnt corpses everywhere. She remembers asking her mother why were all the mannequins lying everywhere.
