    FOREWORD

Welcome to a close-up magic book that is ‘sleightly’ different! In these pages you will not only find tricks and routines for the close-up magician, but also video links to some of the tricks. Over the years I have launched various teach-in videos that have now been digitized, plus in recent years launched a Trick of the Week series on You Tube where I have performed some of the tricks described in these pages.

One important point that needs to be stressed is that this is not a ‘theoretical’ book. In other words, these are not dreams I had that have been put into print with the hope that someone will discover a practical solution to make the tricks work. These are real tricks, performed to real audiences by a professional magician!

As a youngster (way before Google and You Tube) I recall buying every book I could lay my hand on, only to be disappointed by 95% of the contents, as often the tricks were not practical for me. I yearned to find a book I could open and use the first few effects and not even finish reading everything as I had enough great material already. I recall Frank Garcia’s Super Subtle Card Miracles being one of the few books that fall into this category.

Hence it is my aim and hope that you will find the majority of the tricks described in these pages as practical, usable and easy to do. Over the years I have learnt that although I am a crazy magician and it has been my job for 30 years, laymen don’t care whether I use a $100 collector deck of cards, or a cheap rip-off deck. They don’t card whether I spent 3 years perfecting a slight, or whether I use a gaffed deck – either way they are not aware of the method. What they do care about it being entertained and amazed.

As a youngster in magic I believe that I was no different to any other young magician, i.e. I dreamt of fame and leaving a legacy. Hence I wrote articles, shot videos and even self-published books that were produced in a desperate attempt for attention and recognition. Today I sit back, somewhat embarrassed at some of these attempts, but also impressed at other original ideas that I feel were pretty nifty for the time I developed them. Therefore today I have taken everything from the past and hopefully revised and reworked the impulsive items, plus honed the better effects that have grown with me over the years into something you can use.

As my career spans three decades and I have met so many magicians and learnt so much from others, I apologize upfront if I have forgotten to acknowledge a fellow originator in any of the routines described in these pages. Please understand that my goal with all my books is to share the not only the tricks, but the magic of this amazing career that has given me such an incredible life. I would never in my wildest dreams have thought that I would have accomplished and experienced so much through the art of conjuring.

If I have learnt anything, it’s never about me, but always about my audience. Focus on them and the magic really happens.

Also, please note that this is the Smashwords version of this book and hence not all the photos are included because of formatting and document size issues related to Smashwords documents. However, please note that ALL photos pertaining to the tricks and working thereof have been included. It’s just the social photos and cartoons that have been left out. These are however all part of the PDF E-Book.

    CLOSE-UP CARDS

    *****

    3,4,5 OF CLUBS

A card is freely selected, and the magician asks for two chances to find the card, e.g. Five of Clubs. The magician removes the Three of Clubs; it is the wrong card. Then, he shows the Four of Clubs that is also wrong! In order to make up for the poor show, the magician places the Three of Clubs on top of the Four of Clubs and rubs the middle pip from the Three onto the Four below, changing it into the Five of Clubs, the selected card! Extremely visual and unexpected!

A regular deck is required along with a faked Three of Clubs. This Three has the centre pip missing. Few people are aware of the fact that, by using a soft eraser, one can erase the printing on most playing cards - especially Bicycle cards!

Thus, one can use any three-value card and merely erase the center pip only as in the pictures below. This should take you around 5-minutes to do.

The setup is as follows: have the Five of Clubs on top of the deck, ready to force onto a spectator. The Three with the missing pip can be anywhere in the deck.

Firstly, you have to force the top card (Five of Clubs) onto an unsuspecting spectator using any method you prefer. Described below is the method that I feel is the cleanest and cheekiest force, yet it fits in well with this effect.

To force the top card, place the deck onto the table and ask the spectator to cut the deck once, anywhere. Of course, you can false shuffle and cut the deck before this; just make sure that the Five of Clubs remains on top. Ask the spectator to cut the deck into two piles.

While speaking to him and getting his eyes off of the cards, pick up the remaining bottom half of the deck, and place this diagonally across the top half, as in the pictures below.

Thus, the spectator cuts pile 1 off pile 2. You then place pile 2 on top of and rotated 90 degrees across pile 1. The audience thinks that pile 1 was placed across pile 2; they are not aware of the cheeky move. So by talking to them or telling a gag while doing this, they really have no chance of noticing what has just happened!

Now, pick up pile 2 and ask the spectator to look at the card on top of pile 1, at the same time saying that this is the card to which he cut. Of course, it isn’t! It is the original top card of the deck, but no one realizes this.

Let the spectator look at the card (Five of Clubs), and then let him, replace the card and shuffle the deck himself. As you are letting the spectator shuffle the deck, you have a valid excuse for asking for two chances to find the chosen card. Once you have the deck back, go through the deck (faces toward you) and find the Five of Clubs. Place this at the bottom of the deck, followed by the Four of Clubs and lastly the gimmicked Three of Clubs. The order from the bottom of the deck is: Three, Four, and Five of Clubs.

Now, lift off the bottom Three of Clubs, keeping your thumb over the area where the middle pip is supposed to be. No one will suspect anything, as they do not know what is about to happen. At this stage, ask whether the card was the Three of Clubs. After the negative reply, keep the Three in the right hand, and now tilt the deck over in your left hand and show the bottom Four of Clubs, inquiring whether this is the card. Again, this is wrong. Follow the pictures below.

Apologize for the mistake, and then offer to rectify the mistake. While saying this, Thumb Count the Four of Clubs off of the Five of Clubs with the left thumb (i.e. get a break under the Four of Clubs.) Place the Three of Spades in the right hand - keeping the thumb over the middle pip area - onto the Four of Clubs, and start to rub the thumb in circular motion across the middle pip area of the Three.

Comment that everyone is about to witness the impossible. Slowly show that the pip has disappeared, and - believe me - many people will swear that the pip vanished before their eyes. Double Lift the Three and Four of Clubs as one card, exposing the Five of Clubs!

You can of course thumb the Five of Clubs off the bottom and let everyone examine the card, while at the same time replacing the Three of Clubs (and Four) to the bottom of the deck, turning the deck face down and then thumbing off the Three as well (leaving the Four behind and out of view) so that 'everything' can be examined!

    8H, 8S & 4D PREDICTION

Here is a great impromptu type effect - the name of which fails me , as I learnt it back in the 70’s in Port Elizabeth, South Africa as a youngster from one of the local magicians in the East Cape Magic Circle. I would guess it must have been John Dunn at the time. This trick is always well received, and back in 1989 at my first lecture for the Magic Circle in London, everyone was totally taken aback! This was a great start to my UK career as I had grown up learning from books written by magicians that were present at that first lecture - so it was a really nice confidence booster for me having learnt my trade in South Africa with very little access to mainstream magic at that time

Three spectators each choose a card. The magician then takes a sheet of newspaper and folds it up. He cuts out a shape in the folds and points to the first spectator, saying that his card was the 8 of Hearts. This is correct, and when the newspaper is unfolded, eight heart shapes have been cut out. Now, he refolds the newspaper, cuts again and says to the second spectator that her card was the 8 of Spades. She confirms it, and he unfolds the paper to now show eight spade shapes cut out.

Again, the newspaper is folded, and again, the magician makes another cut. Looking at the last spectator, he says that the last card was the 8 of Diamonds. Wrong! It was the 4 of Diamonds. Somewhat startled, the magician does a double take and unfolds the newspaper. Believe it or not, there are now four big Diamonds cut out; he was right all along!

This is a great trick with everyday items with a good surprise ending.

You can use any deck of cards, a pair of scissors, and a large sheet of newspaper. Obviously you will need to force all three cards, using any method. On top of the deck, place the 4 of Diamonds, 8 of Spades, and the 8 of Hearts and force from the top in that order making sure you know who has which card!

The newspaper has to be folded in half 4 times as in the pictures below.

The first cut will be the 8 of Hearts; cut this shape out in the last fold as in the pictures below.

Once this has been done, unfold the newspaper and reveal the 8H.

Now, fold it up again and merely cut out the small tail section of the spade. Unfold everything, showing the 8S.

For the last time, fold up the sheet, and this time cut right across the corner of the fold as in the pictures below.

You are now cutting the diamond shape out of every two spades! The audience, of course, is
