They found Xorek in the temple of Suuni the Passionate. By his reputation he should have been sacking that temple, night black plates of armor on his back, twirling blade Shadowcarver in one hand, and a chorus of demons slaying and razing all about him.
But the man they saw knelt as though in prayer before the golden statue of The Most Beautiful. In place of a sword he wore a long dagger with a hilt carved from bone. In place of midnight plates he bore worn dusky leathers. But he was of a height, his hands scarred, his shoulders broad, and his hair red as old blood.
He looked dangerous, but not like a man who needed five of them. Still, they knew that no warrior grew his reputation without spilling lives.

she said, voice husky. Come, leave your scores outside and let us find you a way to worship the goddess as she prefers.
Their leader shook his head and pointed an angry finger at Xorek, the passion in his own mind fixed on his task.
Very well, but I warn you. Men who raise weapons in the temple of Suuni often find weapons are the only things they can raise.
The leader stepped past the priestess. His men followed, though he noticed their reluctance. But perhaps they did not
