About the Author
A Happy Aspie
My name is Travis Breeding. I have Asperger Syndrome amongst many other things. I also have schizophrenia which has at times made my life very challenging and hard to live with. There were times when I did not like my autism because I thought that it was what was hurting me.
I remember a time when I was happy that I had a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. That was before I got sick and had a psychotic episode. Schizophrenia really took over my life and I thought that it was the autism acting up and making life difficult for me.
I did not know what to think when I started having hallucinations. I was very confused and I knew I had autism but did not know I had schizophrenia. So for many years as I suffered from schizophrenia I was very down on my autism and did not want anything to do with my autism. But the thing is I was confused and thought that the autism was causing me all of those voices and visions that I was having. I thought the autism was trying to kill me. I guess that is a delusion that I was having. I always thought people who worked for autism organizations were trying to hurt me and that is something that really hurts me that I thought that because it caused me to question a lot of people and I lost a lot of good friends in the autism community when I was very confused about the autism and what it was doing to me.
There was no way I was ever going to be able to enjoy my autism as long as the mental illness was going on in my brain. Mental illness is devastating and life threatening but autism is not. Autism is a beautiful thing and something that I enjoy very much.
Recently I started a new medicine for schizophrenia called Invega. The invega is given to me as a shot so that I am able to only take it once a month and it gets into my blood stream faster. This is something that is very helpful. I am on about eight different medications right now but each one of them are working to help me and attack my mental illness. Each medication is fighting the mental illness and helping me to overcome schizophrenia.
As I am able to notice that my schizophrenia is getting better I am starting to find a new reborn appreciation for my autism. I am working really hard to make sure that the schizophrenia stays away and does not bother me anymore. I make sure to take my medication each and every day morning and night because I feel like that is the best way for me to get the help that I need.
As my schizophrenia has started to
