Chapter One
Brad Templeton half listened to his mother on the phone as she described yet again how beautiful the decorations were the servants had put up for her this year. Every year she had a new color scheme and he thought she'd overdone it this year with the red. He wanted to tell her what the mansion looked like to him as he drove up to it last night to drop off Christmas presents for her and his dad and brother, but had refrained from doing so. What was the big deal anyway? Christmas came and went in one day and all the hoopla wasn't worth the effort to him.
He shoved back from his desk, switched the phone to speakerphone, and let his mom ramble on. Cookies, pastries, candy canes. For once in all his thirty years, he'd like to spend a quiet Christmas away from his family and the relatives. Surely there was more meaning to Christmas than what he'd ever experienced.
His family commented to him many times about being a scrooge. Not in the way of money, for he spent thousands on Christmas presents and received expensive gifts back, but he'd like to spend a Christmas where those gifts was appreciated.
His mom's voice caught his wayward thoughts. I'll let you know what I'm doing on Christmas day, mom. I may not be in town. Love you,
he said, and switched off the phone. He didn't mean to be rude, but he knew his mother wouldn't let the matter drop and he didn't feel like arguing with her. She usually won, but not this time.
He pressed a button on the phone and told his secretary to come into his office. When Gail Lighton walked in, he ignored her come hither looks and
