Chapter One
Awakening
I begin to feel a slight draft coming up my leg. It started at my feet and began to move swiftly upward through the hairs on my leg as if something was crawling on me. As I realize I am naked I quickly curl my toes and feet in an effort to wrap the sheet in a snug position under my heels. As I open my eyes, I realize the room is full of people. Because my little soldier is at attention, I quickly grab my crotch to block any imprint from coming through the sheets and scan the room for my outer garments. I notice I am in a hospital; I have tubes in my nose, and a needle inserted in the vein located on the top of my left hand where my middle finger is. I have patches on my chest that are wired to a beeping machine. Immediately I feel my stress level starting to rise. I am becoming anxious. The beeping of that machine along with everyone staring at me has sparked a flame inside of me that is leading to an explosion.
The center of my eyebrows begins to take the shape of an upside down triangle; my heart is beating faster, I want to sit up, and I want my clothes. As I get up the male doctor places his right hand on my left shoulder, and his left hand is holding the needle in place on my left hand. I take my right hand and forcefully push him in the chest enough to make him take two steps back and fall into the visitors’ seat next to my neighborhood friend Black. I don’t want a problem with the doctor I just want my own space back. As I rip one of the patches off my chest my best friend Jay motions to the doctor and police at the door to stay still. He places his right hand on my left shoulder with just enough firmness to let me know he wants me to stay seated on the edge of the bed. Jay has been my best friend since we were kids and is someone I trust which is very rare for me, so I pause. I look into his face and see his hair line is not the sharpest which is very unusual for him. Then he says, "You gotta chill kid. They hit you up and you caught one in the head. You been down for a minute, but me and Lisa been here every day."
I have a wrap around my head and scars all over my body. I have needles and patches all over me. I see computer screens that show my brain and heart rate as if I am in some kind of movie. My heart beat slows as I try to gather my thoughts. I can tell the doctor realizes I am taking everything in and becoming calmer. He begins to sit up and approach me cautiously as I look at him with welcoming eyes. As the doctor places the patches back on my chest and ushers me back on to my back, I look at him with an apologetic face; he does not speak, but I can tell he is understanding and is over it.
As I lean back I am in shock and still processing the words from Jay Harlem. I am having a little trouble remembering how I got to the hospital. I have so many questions. Who was I attacked by? Did this happen yesterday? How did things go down? If Jay said he and Lisa have been here every day, then how long have I been here but all that comes out of my mouth is
I got attacked? I’ve been shot?
Black jumps up and leans over Jay’s shoulder to
