Dr. Tatum and Seth
*
The sunlight broke over the tops of the mountains and shined across Seth’s closed eyelids. Instinctively, he placed his free hand across his forehead to block the light. It was mid-morning, and he found that his other arm was wrapped around Dr. Tatum’s waist for warmth as they lay beneath a rocky outcropping on the mountainside, protected from the snow. Feeling slightly awkward about his close proximity with her, he rolled over and removed his arm from her slim waist, and he rubbed the frozen sleep from his eyes. He got to his feet and stood up as tall as he could under the rocks, and then he walked out into the snow where he stretched his weary, aching limbs.
Good morning,
a familiar voice said to him, and he turned to find Dr. Tatum sitting up and yawning. You slept well last night,
she said, and he turned his head to hide his blush. There was nothing of which to be ashamed, for nothing had happened between the two of them, but he felt as if he should try to keep the relationship with Dr. Tatum as professional as possible under all circumstances. You were really snoring away, and we aren’t that far away from the lions.
Oh, uh, sorry,
Seth replied, and he combed his hair with his hands as he looked at the unfamiliar surroundings. He spotted the cave where they had stayed the previous night across the valley, and he watched for signs of movement on the mountainside. After several minutes of watching, he decided that the lions had moved on, and he nervously turned around and scanned the rocks above them. Still, there was nothing, and his tension eased somewhat. Don’t take this the wrong way, Doc, but I am ready to get out of this place and back to civilization.
Me, too. I could use a shower,
Sherry replied as she stood up and brushed the snow from her fur coat. I wonder where Steven is,
she added. Seth caught her eyes and shook his head in reply. She knew what he was thinking, yet there was no reason to lose all hope. I know, I know. He left us, and with the lions prowling out here, there isn’t much hope that he is still alive. Nevertheless, we should try to find out what happened to him, in case he is still alive. I would hate to leave a man stranded out here in this cold, desolate place,
she continued, though she doubted that they would find him out here in the snow and treacherous slopes.
The cave is right across from us. We could get there in a few minutes if you used the charm to walk across,
he replied. Seth had no desire to participate in rescue and recovery so early in the day, and in his mind, it would only be a recovery mission. Those were the worst missions since the discovered party was almost always a body . . . or just the remnants of a body. It made his blood chill him to the bone to even think about it. Dr. Tatum stepped up beside him and latched onto his hand, and she squeezed it gently to let him know that he was not alone. Helpless to stop himself, the beginnings of a smile broke out across his face, and he exhaled a sigh of steamy vapor in the mountain breeze that cut across the valley. All right, you win,
he offered, and she clasped the magical charm in her other hand. They disappeared from the mountainside, and they walked hand in hand across the
