Rabbit and the Mysteriously Missing Daughter

    Oh blessed night !

I raced up the steep wooden stairs of the house I shared with Mother, as silent as a shadow, despite the many pots of sweet pear wine I’d shared with Long Yen, celebrating his upcoming wedding. He’d been trying to forget how restricted his life was about to become, while I—I was losing one of the few close relationships

    I

    had

    .

It was well past the middle of the night, almost to the hour of the Ox. I knew I must sleep soon—since becoming a full apprentice to Master Wei, he’d insisted on even longer hours of work from me at the law office.

Desperate for sleep, I didn’t notice the shadowy shape squatting in the corner until I’d already tugged open my robe and half shrugged out of one shoulder.

At least I didn’t squeak. Or not loudly enough to wake Mother.

Who are you? I hissed, tugging my robe back up. "What do

    you

    want

    ?"

The amused chuckle that rose from the shadow froze me in place. How could a laugh have so many layers of danger?

I also recognized that voice, that threat, that malice.

It was the professional thief, the one my friends and I had met stealing back the statue of my goddess, Bái

    Hua

    Bàn

    .

I’m here for my favor, Rabbit, the shadow explained. "Shut

    the

    door

    ."

I hesitated, debating racing out of it instead. But I had no guarantee that the thief wouldn’t catch me before I took even three steps. Plus, the last time we’d met, he’d assured me that what he would ask from me would be legal.

    Well. Mostly legal.

I closed the door, tied my robe shut, then went to stand in front of the thief. How may I help you? I asked formally, giving him a short bow—certainly not as deep as I would give to a valued client, no, this was calculated for a second or third tier customer,

    at

    best

    .

The thief didn’t take offense. I need the skills of a law clerk.

I raised my eyebrow at that, but I didn’t say anything. I would have though he’d be able to buy the services of any lawyer or clerk.

    Why

    me

    ?

"The discreet services, he emphasized. Someone who is clever, who can file a will at the Xi law offices without raising any suspicions or interest."

    Your will? I
