Brooke Becker
Brooke Becker currently lives in East Aurora, NY. The inspiration for the Sammy Blizzard series came to her when she was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming watching the snow gently fall. She wondered what the life of a snowflake was like. That question led her to writing about it, interweaving spiritual tenets from various traditions throughout the stories. The major themes of the books are accepting life changes; global warming and other environmental issues; social topics, such as accepting difference and not pre judging others; reinforcing the positive qualities of courage, compassion, curiosity, and kindness; and addressing universal spiritual topics without being dogmatic or disposed to any particular tradition. The reading level is 7 years and up. Along with writing the Sammy Blizzard series, she is a therapist in the healing arts, incorporating many different customs and modalities in the bodywork that she does. She also teaches mindful meditation, Yang style tai chi chuan and many different kinds of qi gong.

what the critics are saying
about the
Sammy Blizzard books
"This story is as delicately written as a snowflake itself. It awakens the reader’s imagination with simultaneous innocence and wisdom, all the while addressing timeless concerns that permeate humanity: destiny, courage, looking beneath the surface, environmentalism, friendship, and more.
–This book is a delightful and nutritious morsel!" R.E.
The story... involves warning about the dangers of global warming and the overcoming of unwarranted prejudices. I recommend it as supplementary reading material for late elementary school children.
–Charles Ashbacher, book reviewer, Vine Voice.
The best part of the book is what the young reader learns about climate warming and the devastation mankind is causing the environment, hence threatening the life of Sammy and all snowflakes.
–Bonnie Neely, book reviewer,
American Society of Journalist and Authors.
It’s fantastic!... As an adult, I really enjoyed this book. It facilitates good conversation between parents and kids. Brooke did a great job of taking huge issues and making them into bite-sized pieces.

The journey continues...
People are like snowflakes: each one unique, not another one like us, yet all originating from the same Source, the same universal flow of Oneness. We are all connected, all the same, yet different. This is the spiritual paradox of life on Earth. This is what the snowflake has to teach us.

Chapter 1
The Destined Trio
Sammy found himself in an interesting place. Here he was, very far from home on the other side of the Cloud, sitting beside an unconscious abominable snowflake (the terrible Frostbite) who had actually turned out to be a wonderful flake and very kind. His best friend, Sylvie, was looking at him with a smile on her face, in awe of his courageous and valiant heart. And the elusive Hidden Crystalline Monastery, home of the Great and Wise Snowflake Elders, had disappeared from sight when he had realized that change was okay. His mission was now complete.
You see, he had been on a quest to find Weather, for he had believed that fickle Weather was the cause of all his problems concerning change. His parents had told him of the snowflake facts of life: that due to Weather, he would Fall into the Unknown. And due to Weather, he would change into water and then again into vapor—invisible no less! Weather seemed to cause these changing cycles of snowflake life. He had thought that if he could locate Weather and convince her not to change, then he wouldn’t have to change either. Then he could go on with his life as it had always been. He had been told that the Great and Wise Snowflake Elders of the Hidden Crystalline Monastery would know of Weather’s whereabouts.
That was seven days ago. It seemed like a lifetime had passed. As he observed his unconscious friend and gazed into the eyes of Sylvie, he realized he was at peace for the first time in his short life. It was okay to change; in fact, change was needed in order for life to continue.
He had learned about compassion. He had befriended Aaron, the universally feared Frostbite. He had learned of Aaron’s terrible fate, a life very different from his own. At first, he had been scared of a being so different from himself. However, as he and Sylvie had come to understand Aaron more and more, they had accepted him and all three had become friends. Sammy realized that because Aaron had fallen and knocked himself out on the ice, he now needed to stay with his friend even though he had a burning desire to fulfill his quest of meeting with the Elders. He thought that when Aaron recovered, the trio could go forward to the Monastery.
Now, the Monastery was not in view. (It appears only to those true of heart when they are seeking answers, which Sammy no longer was). He felt wiser now, with more understanding. As he was contemplating all of this, Sylvie spoke, Sammy, what happened? One minute I was on Aaron’s shoulder, and the next I was propelled through the air and landed on an ice formation. Is he okay, Sammy?
Sammy looked at their friend. I don’t know, Sylvie. He looks pretty out of it to me. I think he hit his head when he fell. Let’s check it out.
Both he and Sylvie investigated Aaron’s head. They gently felt the area that was in contact with the ice. There was a sizable bump there. It probably would have been much bigger, yet the ice seemed to minimize the swelling. As they laid his massive head back on the ice, a groan erupted from his blue lips.
Arrgh, what happened? Where am I?
Aaron muttered as he blinked his eyes, rubbing his sore skull. Who, who are you? Do I know you?
He shook his head as if to rattle something into place, perhaps his memory.
He looked around, squinting into the sky, shaking his head, his mouth half open as though attempting to grasp at some kind of reality. He looked at Sammy for what seemed like several minutes, then to Sylvie. As he closed his eyes, a smile came to his lips. Sammy and Sylvie automatically shuddered at the same time upon seeing all of those rows of serrated fangs.
Aaron opened his eyes, now twinkling, and with great laughter spoke, "Ah, my friends, I remember you now. We were walking and I must have slipped on the ice. Having rounded, blunt points instead of sharp ones, my footing is normally not too stable. On
